Whats HDRI? And how do I create it?

I came across alot of pictures that said something about HDRI. But I have no idea what is.

One thing I notcied though was that alot of the renders were photorealistic or VERY close to it. I’m not going to lie when It comes to textures i’m really not that good I have the basics down fairly well but basics don’t cut it for making a photorealistic scene.

I would REALLY like to create a SIMPLE photorealistic scene and I was wondering what HDRI has to do with it?

Please explain in detail if you can. I need all the texturing help I can get!

Here’s a quick tutorial to get you started:

http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Tutorials/HDRI_with_YafRay

Well I followed the tutorial to a T but I got really crapy resaults. Everything was blurry and very up close. It didn’t even show the whole image. What am I doing wrong?

It would probably be easier to answer that if you posted your results or a .blend. I should start with the ubiquitous (:D) glass sphere like below to practice with. You got Yafray installed then?

Ooops! I forgot the pic

OK. So I’m a little confused. A HDRI actualy isnt the image you use to go on your meshes, it just sits around(world) the meshs to cast shadows/add light to make the scene more realistic?

That would be my understanding too, I think you’ve got it

AHHH ok. I was a little confused. But quick question. To make the texture more realistic after you have modeled everything should you scale everything(the mesh the lights the camera) down to make the texture more realistic? Or is there another way of giving them more detail.

Well here is my atempt at making photoreal wood.

I added the sphere just for kicks. What do you think?

Anything else that I missed that I could make it more life like?

looks a bit plain, add a bump map to it.
and if you really want your hdri image to come out make your wood more specular I think (vernish like).
