What's the best way to build a triangle?

When using the spacebar —>mesh —>plane command method, you usually wind up with a four sided mesh. In some instances, I need a triangle instead of a square. The method I usually use to create triangles is too time consuming and involves too may steps. I’ve been using cylanders, creating ones with only three verticies, then deleting most of the verticies in edit mode. I need a simpler way. Is there another way to build a triangle?

You could make a 3 vertices circle.

Well it would not be a perfect triangle then.

You could make a 3 vertices circle.

Theeth, thanks for the suggestion, but it was no help. I discovered that a 3-vertex circle wouldn’t act as a plane. I need a way to build a triangular plane.

as I said,…weld verts with alt M. also, what do you mean you cant have a plane with 3 verts? to face any 2, 3, or 4 selected vertices, use ‘F’ key.

Also, the WKEY in Edit Mode will give you all sorts of cool little options, Merge being one of them.

I propose the following for creating a triangle:

  1. Choose Mesh->Add->Monkey;

  2. Delete the top half of it in Frontview;

  3. Delete the right half of what’s left of it in Frontview;

  4. Now you have a more usable, simpler mesh;

  5. Select all vertices and press CTRL-T; now you have only triangles!

  6. Exit editmode

  7. Enter faceselect mode (F)

  8. Select any one of the faces (it must be a triagle!)

  9. Enter edit mode

  10. Click “Select swap” in editbuttons

  11. XKEY -> vertices

  12. VOILA! YOUR TRIANGLE!

A 3 vertice mesh circle does act like a plane. I don’t get this part. Add>Mesh>Circle make it 3 vertices, hit F to face it…

Naaaaa, here’s the correct way
to have an equilateral triangle.

1 - Add a plane (SPACE>>Add>>Mesh>>Plane)

2 - Delete top two vertices

3 - Select one vertex, SHIFT-S CURS to SEL

4 - Exit Edit Mode (TAB)

5 - Add a NURBS circle. Scale it (SKEY) untill the circle centtered on the first vertex, passes through the SECOND vertex (THe other end of the segment

6 - Exit editmode, select segment, enter editmode, select the OTHER vertex
and place cursor there (SHIFT-S CURS to SEL)

7 - Exit Editmode, select NURBS circle duplicate it (SHIFT-D)

8 - Snap NURBS to cursor (SHIFT-S SEL to CURS)

9 - Now the two circle intersects in two points, choose one

10 - Select segment and go to Edit Mode

11 - Exactly where circle meet, press CTRL-LMB, a new vertex appears

12 - Select all vertices, press F KEY

13 - Exit Edit Mode, select and delete NURBS circles (XKEY)

Here’s your triangle

I think I’ve improved your method.

5 - Add a NURBS Sphere. Scale it (SKEY) untill the suface centtered on the first vertex, passes through the SECOND vertex (THe other end of the segment

7 - Exit Editmode, select NURBS Sphere duplicate it (SHIFT-D)

9 - Now the select the two Spheres and convert to mesh (ALT-C)

10 - Intersect (W)

11 - Select new interesect object and enter edit mode

12 - Select all (A) remove doubles; deselect all (A)

13 - Box select center “line” and select swap (B)

14 - Delete selected vertices (X)

15 - Select a one of remaining vertices and select swap

16 - Delete selected vertices and exit edit mode (X)

17 - Shift select segment and join and go to Edit Mode (CTRL- J)

18 -

19 - Exit Edit Mode, select and delete Spheres and intersect mesh (XKEY)

But Modron’s suggestion is not bad, either… “Create a cylinder, select the top of it, merge vertices”… a 3D Triangle! Great!
