Wheat

Here is a cycles render (350 samples) of some wheat. Any suggestions about modeling, texturing, or compositing would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Riley

I’d maybe add some more texture or translucence to the grain; as is it looks like there’s no texture on the object, it just looks like a flat golden brown material to me. In addition, the spines that are used to release the individual grains are a little shorter than wild grain would be (domesticated grain can be significantly shorter; but most photo references have longer ones).

Wild(ish):

Domestic:

I’d push the grains closer together on the stalk, and rough them up a little bit, making them less uniform and more scattered around; you probably shouldn’t be able to see any stalk through the grains, and they’re probably not going to be all the same size or rotation around the stem.

Consider giving them a more green color on the stem and lower grains, and more of a light brown color above.

Example:

I do like your compositing a good deal; perhaps increase your Depth of Field effect a mite, and consider making a plane for the background to hide the gaps between wheat; it looks a little like all the grain’s on a perfectly flat plane, and unless you want to create the idea that there’s a sudden cliff off the edge you should hide those gaps with a plane colored similarly, but perhaps a bit darker than your wheat, to make things more apparent. Look at the example directly above this for a good baseline to go off of for creating the false depth here.

Very good. Maybe try adding variation to the individual sticks, by duplicating the one you used and changing it manualluy.

That way you will have three or four different types of wheat making it look more realistic

THe sky looks to much like the color of the wheat. A blue or purple-ish sky would look much better

It’s too regular,every kernel is very plump,not natural.But I feel the color is good.

Agree with everyone above, needs texture work most in my opinion. I think that will take care of the issue with the background blending with the wheat. It also needs some variation. But overall, good start, lots of potential.
