Because more often than not I see WIP threads that start when the game is just a gun model, a player model, or some props in a scene that’s not playable. I’d like you to tell aspiring game developers here when a game is considered far enough along to be worth a WIP thread.
I personally think a first demo has to be playable with the basic premise of the game down, if it’s an FPS give a nice textured environment with shooting and walking probably furnished with some physics objects or working concepts of objects that hurt you.
For an arcade game, at least have a few levels ready to go or one that really puts out the concept of the game that’s completely playable.
Sure those who are new may be tempted to put out just pretty pictures in the first stages but what’s important is a demo that attempts to lay down the line on controls and the game’s concept, this is more important to start with than just a single model because it shows from the start the game is already in the stage where gameplay is being done and not just models.
Anyone’s opinions on how an initial introduction of a WIP should be done?
Maybe it would be nice to have a recruiting section, that would clean up the wip section a lot. A lot of the wip threads are people saying “I’m making this game, help please?” If you’re lucky you might see some concept or screenies or something, but usually not.
I don’t look at that section a lot becuase the threads usually just get rediculously long with people using the thread for communication for their game. Also, there are a lot of games that go no where.
If you don’t like stuff, ignore it. The WIP forum is an open forum and the only requirement for posting there is that you show something you created. There are no further regulations, nor will there be.
