When symmetry fails

What could be the cause when blender with enabled symmetry doesn’t recognize vertices that are accurately mirrored?

Vertex in -x
2

Vertex in +x
1

As you can see, they are perfectly symmetric but pulling on one (with symmetry x activated) leaves the opposite behind. I stumbled over this problem a couple of times and can’t make any sense of it.

You may have duplicate vertices. If you have two vertices in the same place, they will not symmetrize correctly. Try “Merge by Distance” and see if a very low value removes any vertices.

You were right. Found 5 overlapping vertices and merged them together and voila, symmetry works once more.

sure thing
