Blender supports Postscript Type 1 fonts.

Try this, it’s a great little program called “Elefont” for making DXF files from TT fonts.

You can convert a TTF font to PT1 using (wow!) TTF2PT1.
http://ttf2pt1.sourceforge.net/download.html - source code
http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/ttf2pt1.htm - Windows binaries

I downloaded the source and installed (make install), it compiles on a mac runnig OS X without any problem. Running the program was easy, and produced good results, usable with BlenderPublisher2.25.
Great find ray_theway!

There are lots of TTF fonts at:

The second font had artifacts so I deleted it.
