where did the verts go?

usually i can select verts at the end of edges.
but now it selects edges and wont select verts?
it still puts in faces etc
what did i do!

You are in edge select mode. See the active (gray) button with the lineon it above the subdivide-button?
This and the two beside it say, what you can choose. The one with the four dots is the one you are looking for.

And if you’re really 1337, you can use Ctrl+Tab.
