where is the best place to find textures?
The best place? Hmm…I normally make them myself. However, I have heard that TurboSquid.com is pretty good. However, they are also expensive. There are many free sources around, but none have a huge catalogue. It is more “hunt-and-peck”
If you don’t mind making most of the work yourself (the recommended method) there’s a great resource @ http://www.imageafter.com
Please note that they don’t have a lot of ready-to-use seamless textures, rather raw, very high resolution material which is an excellent start for your own custom maps.

I recently found a great source of textures if you have use of any old or crackled paint. A paint or hardware store has those little sample chips. Take a handful home, (ask nicely first 
) fire up gimp and scan them in. From there make them seamless and creat a bump map and you got it.

That method would be very effective because you could set the quality level to whatever you wanted. The only problem is having to clean the paint chips off of (and maybe even out of) your scanner!

I don’t think those are the kind of paint chips Elsdon was talking about hehe. They’re peices of paper or cardboard with a square painted. They’re used so people can get a bunch of samples, to look for the paint they want to use. They’re not messy.
We just moved home, and found the renters left our house a disaster, and have been trying to fix it up (not much money to do it with though). Anyhow… we found that for many of the textured paints (such as concrete paint), many manufacturers have booklets that have a whole page with 15-20 different samples on it… a couple of those ought to give you a start at a good library. You can also find all sorts of other samples, for tile, lanoleum (sp?), carpets, fabrics, etc.
