Wheres My RAM Going?

Hey, I can’t remember how to find out where my RAM speed is going, it was on a page that also showed how much processor I was using.
This computer is a windows vista, and its really acting up this morning, and I want to know why.

Right click your taskbar, and open the Task manager. Select the processes tab, and sort by memory usage by pressing the header on the memory column.

Well, if you are running windows, there is much more to it than that. You may have all kinds of programs, services and crap like that starting up when you boot your computer. The task bar is simply not a good diagnostic tool. Here, I will give this link, it far superiour:

good link thx

Hey, N/P man. It is just a thing that I do. Here is another link to investigate if you really want to streamline your system(s) :

Generally speaking, it is good to see high consumption of memory … as long as you have it. What you don’t want to see is high virtual-memory paging rates. (In fact, with the hardware that’s in most consumer boxes, “if it starts paging at all, back off.” Simplify the problem. Choose more memory-conservative settings. But, only until the paging-rate dies off.

Generally speaking, that may be true. However, I feel that it is best to free up your system resources as well as you can. This would include deleting such things as desktop images (eye candy), A bunch of icons (put them in a file or folder some where then put them on your task bar), eliminate all unused services (You may be be surprised at how many you do not need, or that are indeed a source of potential harm to your system(s)). This is not exactly rocket science you know, yet it does take a bit of study or investigation. In fact, did you know that you can run windows without any services at all? It’s true! Only use what you really need!

Here! I can not teach you in a forum!

Oh yeah, no question about that. And it happens big-time in commercial Linux distros, too. You do want to strip down your computer to only what you need.

In the case of Windows, it’s also worth noting that the memory-manager is, ahhh… “very easily constipated.” I also very seriously doubt the usage figures that it comes up with.

Pardon me, but I could just not help this. You asked “Where is my Ram going?” He just might be chasing a ewe!
