The answer, as was stated enough times so I don’t have to quote, is that it had gone way off topic. Please note, it was not locked, was not deleted, just moved. I have absolutely no idea why it would make an ounce of difference which address the thread is at, as long as news can still be posted and read. Some people actually got that and kept posting informative info that was on topic.
(I’m not addressing you personally, you just express it best for quoting) I have done that, ie deleted posts, left warnings, made pleas, locked and deleted threads, and I can tell you from long experience it lasts for exactly 1 page (no, not 1 day - 1 page). In this case there was not one single report about it going off topic or about flame wars or personal insults - not even from those who were complaining about it in the thread.
So, moving it to Off Topic seems to have got everyone’s attention, seems that was more of a scandal than it being derailed, absurd as that may sound. My reason?

Contrary to what most folks think “the moderators” don’t discuss this kind of thing, we each deal with it in our own way. I don’t know when one of the others moves, locks or deletes a thread/post. Their bona fides were well established well before they were asked to moderate and it’s unnecessary. There are many different ways of doing things other than locking or deleting. Hopefully stimulating the community to get involved in their own creation could turn out to be more productive than authoritarian moderating?
It wasn’t deleted, it was Merged with the original one, starting with post #9238, which, again, was neither locked nor deleted, so still open for business. I had every intention of moving it back when things had got back on topic
I hope this goes some way to address that. I could have posted this in that thread and taken it further off topic, but chose not to. Hopefully this serves as an example of how to segueway out of one thread into another.
