I always hated how Gimp looked compared to Photoshop. Here’s my modified version of Linux Gimp 2.8 that aims to resemble Photoshop CS6 a little. I’m quite pleased with it
Ok, here’s the quick guide for Linux users (I’m on Ubuntu, but I’m sure it’s the same on other distros too). For Windows users there’s already a ton of info on installing GTK themes, just Google it
If you’re using KDE, then as far as I know Gimp will take on your desktop theme – I don’t have KDE installed to test, but it won’t harm anything trying.
First up download this link, it contains the gtkrc file which is the GTK2 theme which Gimp 2.8 recognises just now (GTK 3 is in the pipeline in future versions of GIMP) – it won’t effect your desktop theme.
Just remove the “.blend” extension, I was having trouble with the original links for 4Shared.
It also contains two other files, darkrc, imagerc and also an images folder for the new grey icons.
It’s all contained in a folder called “Cool Gimp”.
I’m not sure who created the icons or the original theme, but I heavily modded the colours of the theme anyway. But if the icons are yours, all credit to you whoever you are!
Un-archive the file and place the “Cool Gimp” folder into your Home folders .gimp-2.8/themes folder. You may have to unhide your hidden files (CTRL+H).
Next re-start Gimp and go into Preferences>Themes and Select the new theme “Cool Gimp”
Nearly there, now the slow bit . Go into Preferences>Appearance and select a dark grey colour for the Custom Padding Colour, I chose #282828 as it matches CS6.
I Moved the Brushes Palette from the Tool panel over to the panel that has the layers – just check out the screenshot if you want to match it. I also jiggled the ones I’d use most often into the same set of tabs giving me maximum space.
Next it’s the Tool Panel, we need to move around the tools to match Photoshop more – it’s obviously not necessary if you’re used to Gimps tools layout, but if you’re more used to Photoshop then it’ll make everything more familiar. Go into Preferences>Toolbox and move the tools either up or down the list to suit.
It think that’s all I did, although my font sizing may be smaller than yours as I prefer a smaller size on screen.
Good luck, if anyone tries it, why not post up a screenshot to see what layout you came up with?
I love the look of Cool Gimp, but some parts of the theme are not showing up. For some reason, the following have the default Gimp color scheme: the menu bar, scroll bars, tabs container, up/down arrow buttons, all buttons. I’ve attached a screenshot below. Also, how can I change the color of the active text from black to white? Thanks.
Hey, that looks really great! I had used GIMP (2.6.12) for two years before I finally got Photoshop, but I really wish I had this when I used GIMP. At first glance I really thought it was PS.
