Why are my hooks and sewing not holding my cloth in place?

Hey folks, sorry to trouble you again, but I’ve encountered a weird, annoying little issue. I’m in the middle of trying to solve this problem but I’ve run into an issue where the hooks in my cloth are not holding it in place when my monkeyhead presses against it.

Ideally, it should be working similarly to this:

…but instead, I’m getting this behaviour…

…where the cloth is torn from the pinned points and blows away from the pressing object.

Can anybody explain why the cloth is not pinning correctly? Absolutely baffled here.

As far as I can tell, there are no vertices assigned to the SewMe group.

In my experience blender has the effect of frying ones brain when trying to do something. Have a good day.
