Why can't we have *only Cycles* upgrades?

To gain insight.

ok, don’t take it too literally. I asked to know what the limitations are, suspecting something similar to what came out.
The provocation was the can’t believe we have to wait more than an year part.
I actually often work with buildbot’s builds so I can even take advantage of the newest stuff.

If that was true, it would clearly be a dick move. The conventional way to gain insight is asking.

I can understand wanting new features in one area without everything else going wonky. I’ve been using the build-bot release for a while for that particular reason. (I think I was damn lucky for the 2.78.x iterations where it was practically stable before going to 2.79.x where there always seems to be something.) I was rather liking the denoiser, filmic, Principled, and a few small optimizer settings they were squeezing into some of the between-version-number releases there. The bigger version change seems to fiddle with more intrinsic architecture stuff, and it seems like there’s reversions or things forgotten and left out in the process.

However I still got to say kudos to the Blender developers. Bug-fix cycle seems pretty fast and quite responsive compared to a lot of other software out there. If a bug that’s reported can be verified, most (but not all of the time) it seems like one of the releases within a week fixes it. And that’s something I find to be pretty amazing.

A little troll goes a long way, towards the wrong end.

TBH I think cycles is a behemoth to add or make changes to…it reminds me a lot of blender pre 2.8 and I think…(I do not know) that it is coming close to the same issues that blender had…too difficult to add new features to and hard to grow/maintain…
I would not be surprised if soon after 2.8 it would need some major restructuring or refactoring…much like blender needs with the depsgraph…I really have no idea…

On a side note, I feel these threads are not productive in any way...the sheer number of people who use cycles points to the fact that it is not going to neglected...as a game engine guy...I see the title of this thread and wonder how people would react if "cycles" was replaced with "game engine".

In any case…no need to worry about cycles development.

Troll? Dick move?
I think you misundertood me, maybe due to barrier language. Maybe the word “provocation” that I used is perceived stronger in english.

Resuming the goal of this thead: being development focused on Blender 2.8, I fear that all Cycles improvements (there are many & jucy worked on) will be available only in the new version, scheduled (hopefully) somewhere in late 2018.
I wanted to know if thee was a solution to take advantage of these improvements during 2.7x life in the next months.
Cycles being decoupled as an addon, could have been a (impossible) solution…
No intention to be a troll neither be a dick. I wouldn’t be here since 2006 just to troll

If there was a logical or easy solution, the developers would certainly be interested to use it. But at the end, they have to prioritize. I am also sure if they see a potential to improve the situation for users, they are going to make use of it.
They can either have a very strong focus on 2.8, such that it becomes available as soon as possible. One possibility here could be focus on stability earlier than usual during the beta phase, such lots of users already switch and at least have the opportunity to test or even work with the new features.
Or they could in parallel work on another 2.7* release. As far as I know, they already decided against it. But if I remember correctly, they didn’t want to have another 2.4* release during the 2.5 development and ended up having one.

Making any decisions at this point would be pointless, because they are constantly evaluating the situation anyways. And once they realize that they have to make a decision, they are going to make one.
As usual, this is going to piss off a part of the community and they will make sure to be heard and are going to blame Ton and the Blender Foundation for it  (I am not implying that you are doing that or that you are going to do that!)
