Why do particles appear in two locations?

I’m adding a particle system on frame 1 of an animation to a rigid body part with the particle frame_start = 50. Between animation frames 1 and 50 the part moves to a different location and then starts emitting particles on animation frame 50 as expected.

…but it particles also start being emitted at the same time at the location where the object was originally at frame 1 even though there is no part there? Anybody know why this might be?
