Why is EEVEE so slow?

I have an iMac late 2009, intel core I7, with 12 gigs of RAM and I can barely navigate the view port in blender 2.8. Why is this???
I am not really a hardware guy. Just so you know.

So the short answer is: Your machine is obsolete.

Blender is highly dependent on the GPU and yours is a Radeon HD 4xxx, that has been unsupported for years.
Time to replace that machine.

Min requirement for b2.8 is OGL 3.3

& Yes, in a way Blender has become too much dependent on GPU hardware while CPUs have become also way stronger than before. For example take a look at Clarisse. No crazy GPUs needed to see what you’re doing with billions of polygons. Hopefully this plan won’t backfire.

Also, Eevee is in experimental/alpha stage, expect to become somewhat normal at the end of beta stage, when optimizations and cleanups will start to take place. BTW. Use Clay or workbench.

@flaviopontes Thank you. That is what I suspected was the problem.
@burnin Clay and Work Bench work fine. Also the values are all responsive. It is just EEVEE that is slow.

What kind machine do I need to run EEVEE on a load (as in all of its features in use at once) fast and responsively?

Eevee (and 2.8’s viewport drawing for that matter) isn’t fully optimized yet (we are still months away from any sort of beta release).

If you need drawing as fast as possible for tasks like modeling and the like, they are working on that (known as the Workbench engine).

i also tend to use blender on macs with iGPU so the new default viewport being what it is currently is surely worrying, especially considering how nicely 2.79 runs everywhere.

i’ve only briefly looked at 2.8 a while back and eevee was noticeably lagging all the time on a windows box with 4ghz i7 with a GTX 1070 even with really simple scenes. some of the demo scenes were unbearably slow to the point it made me wonder who might have had the patience to set these up in the first place or what kind of supercomputer they must have been using to do so comfortably.

judging by experiences with developments in other 3D software i’m very skeptical that this is just down to me having used debug-builds or some optimizations yet to be implemented. at this rate i don’t think 2.8 will really replace 2.79 for a good while.

needless to say i’d love to be proven wrong.

Hi! I know this is an old thread, just wondering how does blender perform now on your system? I have 2009 core 2 duo jeje but am planning on swapping the logic board with a core i7 from 2009 with a 6970 radeon card.
