Why is this happening

Every time I set something smooth, these weird things happen on the objest. In the picture below, you can see it in the joints. I tried Ctrl-N but it didn’t do nothing. This has been happenning for a while and I don’t know what to do.

For some reason the normal caculations dont like tri’s. I’ve had that battle before and I’ve never won.

Those faces look flat any way so just add an Edgesplit modifier to your object.

Do your meshes have triangles in them? It looks to me as if you are using cylinders, which have triangles at the top and bottom. There is a way around this, and it goes as follows:

  1. Add a subsurf modifier to your cylinders.
  2. Go into edit mode and Loop Cut(Ctrl-R) your cylinders horizontally at both ends, pulling the cuts to the top.
  3. Set smooth.

This is the best solution I can come up with. See the screenshots for a better illustration of what I mean.

thanks a lot, I’ll try that

Try turning on Auto Smooth, which is located in the Mesh panel under the Editing Buttons. Also try removing doubles. Also in edit mode try deselecting everything and then Select->Non-Manifold to see if you’re having any geometry weirdness.
