Why mesh changes are not retained in Object mode???

( Blender 2.49b )

When I move or rotate faces of a rigged character in edit mode and return back to object mode, changes are NOT retained. Only when I delete faces, blender remembers the changes -otherwise it ignores them. Is there some setting to make it recognize the changes before I get back to object mode??? This is extremely frustrating… nothing works as expected.

This is a shape issue indeed, since there are shape keys, the basis mesh cannot be modified just like that. Now I need to find out how to “create a new shape, and using a script, copy the shape keys over to the new shape, adjusting them”. Of course, deleting them is not an option.
