why no 3DS max

why can’t blender import 3DS max?
it can import 3DS
thanks

Because, it’s a closed source, proprietary format. Plus, things like bones, constraints etc, are handled differently, in different packages. You can’t open .max files in Maya or Xsi (without third party exporters/importers) either, and they’re all owned by the same company. It’s just not going to happen, sorry. Same thing with fbx. Collada, holds a glimmer of hope, though.

Thanks for the explanation

You can open Max files with Cinema4D!

Really? It’s just, I don’t see it listed on Maxon’s list of supported file formats
http://www.maxon.net/products/cinema-4d/highlights/file-formats.html

Of course, you can open *.3ds files, but they aren’t *.max files. The only way seems to be via PolyTrans, fbx etc. On the flipside, you can’t open blend files in Max, either.

I guess Max users would say “SHIT” here.
