apparently they can be very dangerous.

Well, yeah, what would be the point of spending hundreds or even thousands on a toy if you can’t engage in some real mayhem?

I mean, really, what are toys for… ?

I’m the firestarter, tricky firestarter

I used to repair/rebuild 2100 watt c02 lasers used for metal cutting. I heard that the unfocused (raw) beam could start fires 2 miles away if the beam mode was dialed in just right and atmospheric conditions permitted. Never tried it though…Mode shots (blasting a piece of polycarbonate so you can see the shape of the beam) was pretty spectacular though!

I think it’s really irresponsible selling these things online. Sure it’s all fun and games when you’re burning paper but in the hands of stupid children, how long do you think it’s going to be before they blind someone and worse if that person is driving a vehicle. I know some professors who work with lasers for a living say they’ve come close to blinding themselves by just pointing the laser the wrong way for a split second. IMO, powerful lasers should be treated as weapons and similar laws to gun sales should apply.

And I thought the 10-watt Ti:sapphire laser on my confocal microscope was dangerous. We’ve accidentally boiled living cells in Petri dishes with the thing.
