My screen resolution is 3840x2160 with 125% DPI.
When I browse BlenderArtists, there are large empty areas on the left and right sides and the sidebar on the left is not wide enough to read categories and as a result, categories names are truncated.
I guess the forum width is about 1730 pixels wide to make it compatible with Full HD (1920x1080) resolutions.
But I know that some websites can adapt their design to the user screen resolution.
Would it be possible to make the main-outlet and the sidebar-wrapper wider for those who use bigger resolutions than 1920x1080 (without relying on a custom Stylus CSS theme) ?
I don’t think this benefits useability - the actual posts will become unreadable at this point. I also don’t hear from other users that this is an issue, so I don’t want to add complexity by adding yet another option to the site.
Almost every webpage/forum does restrict the width in some way because of the too loong way the eyes have to follow over the “reading area”.
In print (and they do have some hundred years of experience) there is also the double column (or more) layout so one can read even quicker because you see the whole text line “at once” and only have to move the eues downwards (and to the next colume)…
Please, let me go back to my first message, I poorly expressed what bothered me the most : the sidebar width.
My main complain was more about the sidebar width rather than the width of the central area of the forum (in fact, I shouldn’t have suggested a wider central forum area). I made it wider mostly for test purposes. In fact, since then, I reverted to a width closer to the default one for the main-outlet DIV, that being said, I kept my changes for the sidebar (to fix the truncated links).
IMO, my suggestion (but only for the sidebar) still stands as it would increase readability of the links of the sidebar.
