If you look at Maya’s UI, it is something which will not intimidate a new user and it gives confidence that 3D animation on Maya can be learned and on the other hand I feel Blender’s present UI is exactly the opposite. So do you think that the new UI of Blender will make it easier to learn, especially for a newcomer?
Well, that is the intention. Whether or not they accomplish that is yet to be seen. Too much in flux for me to make a judgement at the moment. Still waiting on some basics to be nailed down (like the “industry standard” interface) before I’ll comment on that.
I don’t see it this way. Who would want to drag their cursor to some place on the screen to click on a button and then drag it back to whatever they are working instead of just using G, R, S keys? Even in Maya W, E, R keys are much easier to use when working with a mouse. It’s a decoration for newbies, that’s all it is in Blender as well as in Maya. Even if it has some benefits(maybe it’s very good for display pen tablets) I would say it has nothing to do with ease of use for most users.
At the moment that particular panel seems useless to me. Well, maybe they will still improve it until 2.8 is released. Maybe I should not judge too soon.
And please don’t get me wrong - it does not do any harm either. I am not saying it’s a step back or something, it just does not seem to be the most useful addition at the moment from my perspective.
define “easier to operate” ? it all depends to which audience you are catering and it seems default 2.8 will cater to absolute beginners while leaving advanced users the ability to customize the UI.
Btw… Maya’s UI is the most intimidating UI that I know xD ? its really not userfriendly or designed well. The pie menus are a disaster and overcrowded to say the least.
I think there were a few changes that make it easier to work with.
The new operator properties panel that pops up in the left bottom corner of 3d View after an operator is used is very nice. That often used to get hidden in the T panel.
New button layouts everywhere are very nice as well, makes it a bit easier to find and see stuff while saving screen space.
The UI layout tabs seem to have potential to save a lot of time.
Some features in the 3d view seem to be easier to access.
I think in general the UI improvements are working for me and my answer to the question must be: Yes 2.8’s UI does make it easier to work with Blender as far. And I think it is still likely to improve further.
Yes! Blender 2.8 is a massive step forward in terms of visual apealing and UI generally is way more polished for newcomers (ofcourse that is just my opinion). In comparison with current 2.79 version it is like a day and night and 2.8 looks so damn sexy(hell I am starting to like 2.8 visual more than 3ds max and that I prefered a lot). Of course there are still a lot of things that are tweaked (like icons atm) but all in all it IS significant difference from 2.79 version. I myself am a huge fan of shortcuts but there are a lot of “clickers” aswell. I think people find it somewhat more intuitive to be able to click on icon that has shape of action you want to perform.
and it raises the bar higher
now you’ll really have to push the work done inside to look really good
otherwise you’ll just tend to look at the pretty interface all the time
People are confusing Blender being complicated with 3d in general being complicated. You can try to hide that complexity in an app like Sculptris or 123D, but that automatically leaves you with a less capable app. Blender doesn’t hide anything from you, so of course it looks complicated, and it will continue to do so. The mild changes regarding how the tools and toolbar operate are stuff a total noob gets past within a couple hours anyway. The actual difficulties start once you’ve mastered the UI.
And if you find Maya inviting, please, by all means, go with that.
3D Animation is complex. Making a rig for an animated character is a position in a studio.
The target of 2.8 is a better UI to accomplish any task done in Blender.
Animation is one of them.
If things are simpler for pros, there is no doubt that will be simpler for newcomers.
Will 2.8 be less intimidating than 2.79 ? There will be templates in 2.8.
They should be less intimidating.
But hiding tools that you need to accomplish something can be less intimidating and less efficient at same time.
Removing too much buttons or panels from UI can be equivalent to a lie.
I can show you in defaults, 5 tools : the UI will seem simple.
But if you need, 20 tools to accomplish that task : you will have to adapt the UI.
And if you are a newbie ; it will be really complex because you don’t know what you need.
So, 2.8 design simplifies 2.79’s one by removing doubles, being more strict for defaults, use more gizmos in 3DView. And sometimes, the result is slower or less obvious.
2.8 is tested in production to try to obtain better compromise.
But, anyways, in any software of this kind, you will have to adapt UI to be more efficient and learn how UI is organized and how tools are working.
2.8 is at alpha state, there is no addon made for it, yet.
Maybe a screen capture of 2.8 with addons UI will look more complex than a 2.79 UI without.
There is a project to make animation using nodes in 2.8. Maybe a screen capture of interactive mode in action will look intimidating, too.
Blender 2.8 is a new blender with blender tools having their behavior. It will not be a clone of Maya.
I find that it’s a lot less of a hassle to do things in 2.8. So in that respect I think it’s easier. However, if some of the controls don’t change (simplify selection in particular)—I think it’ll still have a reputation for a steep learning curve.
I am a newcomer to Blender and with the current UI and looks and operations I have given up. Do you think this could change with Blender 2.8? Will it at least make me want to try a bit hard because it won’t look so impossible?
you are newcomer to blender or generally in 3d world ? if the second then any 3d software are massively hard to master it will take years ,
for me it didnt change nothing from the new ui because i know every shortcut on blender and every part of its,
i have make my own templates for rigging and animation
I doubt it. I would say that the UI changes only a few percent of the whole experience. There are other big improvements in 2.8, however core concepts remain the same. And I think one gives up on those, not the packaging. It’s very exciting for all users of Blender because what we do is going to be a little bit better, easier smoother, more effortless and so on, but being a new user is a whole different matter. I think the decision not to give up has to happen in one’s head, and has little to do with the UI. You might find new motivation with all the awesomeness of EEVEE though. It is definitely going to be a lot more fun to use Blender 2.8 and this is a big deal - it can be a big contribution to not giving up. Well, it is going to be easier to discover functions with the UI improvements. That helps, but like I said - only a few percent…
No. Blender 2.8 continues being a non-intuitive app, it just looks prettier.
The only thing that makes 2.8 slightly more friendly is the concept of active tools, which is familiar to anyone coming from any app.
The problem in Blender is that everything is all over the place, and most of the time in places you don’t expect it to be, therefore not easy to learn.
well i come from using maya for about 6 years, and i can tell you it’s definitely much more easier and intuitive yet efficient …i was able to learn most of the core things in few days and now trying to understand the code, and not only that it has features that are more powerful than maya, like years ahead.
