Windows 8. Do you like?

The Incoming Windows 8 will be suitable for both - Touch screens and desktop computers.

Personally i find the design completely terrible.
Microsoft is completely missing the point on what the users want from a shell design…
The shell is overbloated.
Even though it may add some nice cool little features, like in the end of the video about file transfer, the UI/GUI design is always going the wrong way when it comes to Windows…
First impression - hate it. But I might change my mind when i try it out.

And no, I’m not a man that just hates something cause it’s different. People usually hate change. I hate it because they mixed both desktop and touch functionality into one, forcing you to have both no matter what machine you have. The correct design would be - freely installable Shells, with two (One for Desktop, one for touch) available in the Windows DVD.

The last part of the first vid shows some file/image management. Kubuntu has been doing all that for a few years now.

Sadly, Microsoft got where it is from smart marketing, not good design. I always feel sorry for regular, non-geek people who have to put up with it’s piss-poor code when all they want to do is surf the web and check their email.

Typical people who do most things in their terminal will always cry about windows. 1980 called and wants its terminal back. :yes:

IMO this looks great. Yes Im regular user, non-geek and I found windows to be much easier to use then Linux to surf the web and check my email.

Linux or Mac do not require that much terminal anymore.
You can do normal every day stuff in Linux without even looking at the terminal…
Though having so many ways to install apps is still kind of a mess in Ubuntu imho…

and I found windows to be much easier to use then Linux
The discussion is about Windows 8, you didn’t try that one yet.
And when was the last time you tried linux? Ubuntu sure advanced a lot.

I wish they would use terminals again :(. uses 0 CPU and ~5KB RAM… Now it’s 30% CPU & 2.6GB RAM D:. And why do they want Windows 8 to be a tablet design? Hey, let’s all go out and buy Windows 8… Oh wait! I need to go buy a multitouch screen!

We have an old computer that we might install Ubuntu on to see if it would be useful for regular use, no one uses it much anyway so installing Ubuntu on it won’t really cause any disruption, my father started having some interest in Ubuntu once the new releases started to sharply reduce the need for the terminal.

If we end up finding it nice as a Linux box, then we may end up dual-booting our Windows machines and actually start using Linux for some tasks, if Windows 8 ends up increasing the eyecandy to the point where it’s a serious downgrade on terms of app. performance, then going the path of less Windows and more Linux may be the way to go.

what i think? it is cool.
why? winos is more unified than the Open Source os’s, and at the same time you can play with the system, i hear every day or two about the difficulties with installing software deps and version conflicts, and the software install system is far from friendly when you don’t have internet, linux devs must understand that not all the people can code their way through linux.

don’t misunderstand me, i like OSS (as you can see i’m using blender) and i’m trying to move to linux, but one major conlict is the apps, most of the people around me using windows apps with no linux support.

as for windows 8, it does bring a new experience with multi-touch, which i can’t find in other os’s.

You can never say that Linux keeps adding eye-candy, because you can remove it if you don’t want it. You can even install different shells, it’s fully customizable after all.

I voted so-so because it is a love/hate thing. I feel more enjoyment out of using Linux but my day job requires me to write software for Windows so regardless of what it is or has (or doesn’t have) I will still have to figure out ways around the flaws and deal with the security issues. I also need to use windows because im a big gamer and Photoshopper and I generally don’t like to mess with getting games to work in Linux.

One thing that i was totally looking forward to for win 7 that got scrapped but would make me a bit excited for win 8 if they do it was to redo NTFS and get rid of that damn registry for a more DB oriented approach. Doubt it will come but still.

Well you should know that I do have one tower that is running Ubuntu.

You said I can do normal every day stuff with out setting things up in terminal? Well lets see… I’ll install Ubuntu and will want my pictures/music/movies/files to stream to my PS3 or 360. This streaming I use everyday and I have home network set up just for that. Under Windows (using something called Homegroups) all I had to do was join the network and type in the password, choose what folders to share and thats it. Under Ubuntu I have to go through all this? http://linuxowns.wordpress.com/2008/04/28/stream-media-from-ubuntu-to-your-ps3/ You kidding me? And what happens if I run into a problem?

This is of course just of the things I run into when dealing with Linux. Running Linux gets me into these kind of problems everyday, hence why I have given up on it.

I can’t imagine using these new features with a traditional desktop, so they will be useless for all who don’t have a touch screen.
Guess these ‘cool new features’ will consume even more Processing Power than windows 7 did (1.5 GB RAM idle is way to much).
That’s one of the main reasons I hate windows.
All these animations of screens flying in are consuming even more power and you have to wait till they’re done. It’s simply too much.
To put it in a nutshell it seems like a smart phone OS. Why should we use this on a PC?

Linux provides more freedom in use. Sure it needs time to get familiar with it, but it’s not hard to use.

Unfortunately most games need windows, so I have a dual boot system.

1.5 GB RAM idle is way to much
not defending ms, but that’s not true, i have 1.5 on my system and working ok, anyway ram is very very cheap 2G DDR3 for about 15$, you could load your PC with 16G easily. although i like how less demanding the linux are.

the problem with linux and most of OSS is that you need more things to do to get things done, and that takes about 30% of your time accomplishing a certain task, take an example GIMP, i can do all my needs in GIMP, but it consumes RAM and CPU, instead photoshop can handle thing much better in the same system.

BTW windows 8 eye candies are likely to be RAM eater but not cpu as i think its web based.

W8 will be W7 with new shiny touch interface on top along with bug fixes and maybe a new icon. It will be marketed as a new OS.
Not much underneath will actually change.
