Windows Protection Error nad other errors

I’m trying to get an old 500mhz atlon k5 or k6, not quite sure, but i’m trying to get one to work. It’s got a good ol’ 4 gig hard drive and i installed windows 98 onto ti. Before that, i deleted the primary partition and made a new one then formated the newly created partition, then I set my bios to boot from the cdrom and installed my copy fo windows 98. All went well, and i got into the windows 98 put in your name/company screen, then i clicked next. It prompted for the cdkey, and i entered it. Then it started setting up my hardware, and it randomly started popping up with the blue screen of death. When i hit a button it just went, and everything seemed to be working fine, till i rebooted. Then i either got an error saying “Windows Protection Error, you need to restart your computer” or the blue screen of death with some fatal exeption. It pretty much did the same thing every time i restarted.

So then i tried to install windows 95, thinking that maybe my disk was screwed up. I installed it, and again all went well, then when i went to boot windows for the first time, guess what? “IOS failed to initalize, windows protection error, you have to restart your computer.” So did, and it gives me the same error, whether i try to boot in safe mode or normal mode. I can get into the command prompt though.

So what’s this windows protection error about? I’m getting kinda sick of it.

Y’know, I found your problem, and you said it many times:

Hope that helps.

Please note that this post was not meant to actually help, but more or less to insult windows.

Well, i MIGHT use linux if, well basically if it had some games that i could play over a network with my windows xp computer.

And windows isn’t as bad as everybody says it is. I have never had 1 crash on my xp computer.

Pooba

what games?

Well done Pooba, us windows users are often oppressed in the elysiun forums, well NO MORE, WE SHALL NOT LAY DOWN TO DIE.

Windows is good for some things, Linux is good for others, unfortunatly windows is good for games, linux isnt.

But you wouldnt be able to get any really powerfull games to run on that machine anyway, so go with linux.

I know the solution – I had the same problem. Windows 95 doesn’t like K6 chips faster than a certain speed (I think it’s 333 MHz), or Athlon chips faster than 1.1 GHz. Yes, I ran Windows 95 on an 1.2 GHz Thunderbird, and got that error.

Here’s what you do:
Download the patch at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/WURecommended/S_WUServicePacks/AMDPatch/Default.asp

You will need Windows 95 OSR2 or newer (this is also known as Windows 95B, 95C, etc).

To install it: downclock your machine to a convenient speed slower than 333 MHz – if you can. If not, try booting into safe mode. By whatever means necessary, get it to boot up…I don’t know if the patch will install under DOS, but that is a possibility.

Booted up? Then install your patch, reboot, set your CPU back to full speed (or overclocked and watercooled if you really want to), and you’re good to go.

I hope this helps,
Matt

All these complicated solutions - I have a far simpler one -
