Wine Scene (BG Contest)

Howdy everyone! I’ve been working on this project for about three weeks and am in need of critique. I created a video that goes through some of the stuff I did to construct my scene. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmWyqjlSYRA&feature=youtu.be Please critique it with everything you’ve got. If you need an other images that I haven’t already included, then don’t hesitate to ask.

The label for the bottle is acting as the diffuse and the alpha, it worked out really well.
I uv unwrapped the room and made it into a map, and now looking back on that I see that was a crazy thing to do. Having no experience with interior molding, I learned a ton. Please don’t hesitate to give it your best critique. I’ve made a ton of mistakes and this will help me next time.

Someone mentioned this in your other thread, but the rack should be much smaller. In real racks, the bottles should almost fill the holes they’re in. Other than that I think this looks great!

well, for one, I think that the entire scene is too dark. Also, just a personal opinion, but the shadows are too soft. if you had taken this photo and the light outside was so bright that it was just white to the camera, the shadows would be hard long ones, on the table. also, especially the wooden rack and the bottles on the rack, i cant faigure out what to cahnge to fix it, but it just looks “dead”. there is little contrast or brightness, especially on this part of the scene, and it kinda just makes the whole picture look dead. there seem to be no reflections on the bottles that are in the rack, and I’m pretty certain there would be some reflections, if even just of the wooden rack. I assume your using blender internal here? try this same scene out in cycles. I think that the objects interact much better in cycles, because at the moment the scene seems a little dead, because each object almost looks like it has been pasted into this shot, rather than them all being in this room together when you took the “photo”.

I really like your cloth texture, that came out really nicely  and the modelling of the window frame really stands out to me. I think its great.

so, hopefully these ideas will help you out  I dont want to come across as mean, just critiquing the hell out of it like you asked  good luck in the competition, Im busy rendering my entry!

Change the color of the background wallpaper first. Lighten it up.

Expect to use a combination of Cycles (for the basic “soft box” lighting) and BI rendering, composited together using nodes, to create the final effect that you want.

Cut away the entire window except for the left edge of the frame, enough merely to suggest its presence.
