Wings3D on OSX

Having read through some of the comments on this board I decided to check out Wings3D to see if it could make my life any easier.

Downloaded it three times now, from different servers and with different software. In all cases I get the same result. I start the app, it gives me a menu and sits there doing nothing at all. No screen, no error messages (even in console), no CPU or disk use, nothing.

I can’t find any help elsewhere so I’m posting here in the hope that someone else has had a similar problem and solved it.

Are you sure you downloaded the Mac version?

Sadly I’m not quite THAT dumb :stuck_out_tongue:

It gets to the point of displaying the “Wings3D Loader” menu and then does nothing at all (though the menus work quite nicely ;)).

I’m assuming that the latest version is working OK for other OS X users so it must be something on my system that’s causing it to happen. I just have no idea what it could be.

Curiouser and curiouser…

I tried running it again - same results.

Went off and worked in blender for a while.

At some stage it appeared in the background!

Now if I could just work out WHY!

Setanta

Maybe because it’s not THAT dumb either?

Further investigation shows that the problem lies in Erlang.

Wings3D works fine - so does Erlang.

However, it takes around 30 minutes for Erlang/Wings to start up :frowning:

I think I’ll have a word with the Erlang crowd or perhaps ‘roll my own’ version of Erlang/Wings and see how it goes

Problem solved.

Erlang was trying to parse my etc/hosts file which was rather large to say the least (half a megabyte or so) and it was taking forever.

Apparently this problem can occur on OS X, all Un*x alikes and on Windows (.hosts file) so if Wings3D is booting up slowly for you, check your hosts file
