Winter - My first Blender image

I did 3D graphics with POV-Ray since 1996. If you are interested in my work please visit http://royschulz.tk

Some months ago I started using Blender. This is my first image:

Actually I planned a short animation but at the moment I do not have the time to finish it. I hope you like it anyway.

Roy

WOW, that is VERY cool!!!

very impressive. How did you get that snow in the tree effect? I like your scene very much.
Paradox

 I love snow, I hate snowmans (scare the shit out of me), either way lookes great especially the trees!!!
p.s. The rendering in your site are absolutely AMAZING :o . Were they all made complitly in pov-ray? (including the modeling?).

Those trees look great. How did you do it?

For the trees I used the L-System: Tree Maker by Armagan. The snowy twigs have a multi-layered texture containing of a painted twig with needles and a transparent/white cloud texture. At first, I tried to model the snow with metaballs and subdivison surfaces but I didn’t get it right.

To @wner: About 90% of my POV-Ray images are scripted in the POV-Editor. Only the organic shapes I modeled in sPatch e.g. the starfighter and the wizard. Blender makes life a lot easier.

Thanks for your reply about the snow in the trees. Very effective technique. Thanks for sharing.
Paradox

Very nice

Welcome to Blender

Stefano

Wait a minute… It’s your first work in Blender? :o

Nice work and welcome.

BgDM

nice work the texturing on the snowman really looks like patted snow lol is the snow that is falling made with particles or just circles or spheres

Good god, where do you people com from!! :o
Thats an awesome scene!!!
I better get my act together real fast…

The falling snow is made with animated particles. Of course the animation is not visible in this still image. But as I said at the beginning, I planned a short movie.

Roy

Could you post a closeup of a branch of one of the trees. I just want to see how effective the snow effect is at close range. Thanks

-Shaun
ps. GREAT MODEL!! keep em coming!

In the close-up, the twigs polygons are visible because they are a bit bigger than the painted texture. So, for close-ups some fine tuning would be necessary. The painted texture already has some white spots painted on it. The transparent/white cloud texture is “added” to the painted texture layer.

nice, but you need to turn down the alpha on those leaf textures, you can see the alpha part of the texture

Turning down alpha would destroy the snow effect. But I changed the shape of the twigs so that the “snow” does not overlap the needles anymore.

Here comes the improved version.

Unfortunately I had to generate new trees in the L-System script to add the changed twigs. Therefore the trees also changed their shape a bit.

Usagi,

For your first posted image, this is exceptional

Welcome to the community, I look forward to seeing more of your work

Nice render. Welcome to elYsiun.

Once again I am beat. (we’re all friends, no competition meant here)

Why is it that I always learn how to use a program and know like every function, and what it does, but can’t produce anything worthwhile?

Oh…woops, off-topic there.

Great render. As you can tell from above in my post, its a whole lot better than my first pieces of work (well, im still in that range, but…). Keep it up. Hope you can produce more works as good as this!
