WIP Daffy Duck

Hey guys ! I’m modeling Daffy Duck at this moment and I have a little problem.
I think it looks like a duck but not really daffy Duck and I can’t manage to find what makes it off.

Here’s the Wires:

And a quick render to get the idea with the colors:

The head is absolutely not definitive, i just did it real quick to have an idea of what was off with the beak.
And don’t mind the “feathers” on the top of his head, I don’t think i’ll do it this way.

Actually, i’m planning to try to get something like this: http://www.cartoonbrew.com/wp-content/uploads/Daffys_Rhapsody.jpg thanks to the upcoming training series by Kent Trammell on Blender Cookie: http://cgcookie.com/blender/coming-soon/coming-soon-plume-complete-blender-training-course/.

Edit: I used this reference: http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa301/looq_capture/Daffy%20Duck/Model%20Sheets/DaffyDuck.jpg

Sorry but I have to ask, is his beak removable? Remember when Elmer Fudd would shoot Daffy in the face and his beak would fall off or be blasted around to the back of his head?

Wow! We watched such violent cartoons as kids.

Yep it’s a complete different object.
Yeah, they were violent but also much funnier than today’s cartoons!

Yeah, cartoons were violent but also so much funnier than today’s ones!

As I see it (on google images), the head of Daffy Duck is more a triangle shape, where yours is more a ellips.
I don’t know if it will help, but you could try that. Or just making the head and beak a little wider?
Otherwise I really like it :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks!
I’ll try this out!
And i think there more than one Daffy duck I mean, the design of the character must have change with the time. And I think I chose one of the first designs (I absolutly don’t know if what i’m saying is true or not).
Anyway, I think i’ll start over the head, I don’t have enough polys to make the eyebrows or to do a good facial rig later. So I think i’ll change my references and I kinda like the beak, i’ll may change some proportions to fit the real beak though.

I’m going to be busy in the next days but I’ll post the progression regularly.

By the way, if anyone happens to know how to delete one of my double post, I didn’t find how to do it (or if an admin could directly delete it) that would be cool!

shape and proportions are wrong
look and compare shape

combien d’experience as- tu avec blender ?

How didn’t i see that ? Thanks!

Okay, this is much much better!
I need to work a bit on the topology around the eyebrows, but nothing really complicated.

@rickyblender: i think ( though I am not entirely sure ) it may be of an earlier version, rickyblender. these characters evolved a fair ammount over time. when daffy duck started out he was a bit skinnier i think, and more whacky. bugs bunny on the other hand started out as being much more ovaloid than he is now.
@muream: are you going to do the whole body? looks pretty good.

Totally awesome. My all time favorite.

@Modron, Yeah, I’ll do the entire body. I don’t know if i’ll have a lot of time to do it before July but I’ll do it.
@Mutantgenepool thanks!

well i was following the reference picture given
and if we keep with this one
the beak is not the same widht

i must admit it has been a while i did not check my friend Duffy !LOL
at least not from a CG point of view!
but now i realise that all these cartoons where done in 2D not 3D!

if you already know some 3Dmax i guess the learning curve should be a lot easier for you
just have to get use with the blender GUI and ask questions here

Yeah, the beak is still not right but it’s a bit difficult since it’s not the same on the front reference than on the side. I think i’ll do the body first and then tweak what’s wrong on the beak.

Yeah, they were excellent 2D cartoon, the guys who did it were really talented!
But they look also really good in 3D. Especially Coyote. If you go check on Youtube, you’ll find some road runner episodes in 3D, I just love them. The way they sticked to the animation is amazing I think.

And yeah, I have no problem going back to blender, the GUI is so intuitive compared to max’s.
And also it doesn’t crash everytime you open the UV editor. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nice work there .i know how hard these fellows are to model i modeled the road runner .
here a link to the rigging test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceGZV-OHUG4

Thanks!

Your road runner looks pretty good too!
I don’t know if you’re still working on it but I think your rigg would be better if you subdivided the tail and neck bones. I know it’s doable with B-bones I don’t know for the other types. But you might have to redo the skinning/weight painting (I’m really not sure).

i’m working on the body right now, I think I will be able to upload it tonight.

Edit:
I tried the subdivided bone thing, you don’t have to redo your skinning and it works with all types of bones (But it seems only B-Bones will display the subdivisions).
And when I say tonight, I mean about 10PM in France.

Okay, i’m juste keeping the thread up to date here.
I didn’t change the beak since last time.
The body is completely wrong, He looks more like a baby duck than Daffy so I’d say the body is too small.
And the foot are just awful, I did it in 10 minutes max.

I think i’ll try to get a shape more like the recent version Daffy, I don’t really like the old one.
So, i’ll probably do the head over again to fit properly with the body. But that’s for later, I’ll see.

Anyway, i kinda like where this is going even if it’s not Daffy yet!

Daffy is looking Great. Your original posted pics do remind me of the original Daffy Character. Both of em look great btw. I got a huge smile just looking at this work

Really clean topology here, and I dig the character and how it’s going.

should add bugs bunny too
they go well together i guess!
