Hi. I am a noobie at blender. This is my first thread. Anway, I am trying to model a pretty basic knife, with a cool blade, but when i go to subsurf it tweaks and looks funny and i am also having trouble with the hilt. I would upload pics but i only know how to save rendered images, so if someone could plz help me out and tell me how to save images of just the 3d view, i could actaully make this thread decent. Thank you to anyone who responds to this at all.
Well you can always use the Print screen button and then past it into paint. That normally how I post wire frames. The problem with subsurf might be solved by using shift+e. Shift+e lets you make sharp edges with subsurf on. Play with and see what happens.
try using the simple subdivision when you’re subdividing, catmull clark smoothes it where simple sub increases the amount of loops without distorting it too much. As for the 3d view rendering, there should be a button on the menu bar saying “Render this window” click that and you should have what you need.
ElectricBlender thank you!! btw i have several files of the knife, in case i have to go back, and they go as far back as to when it was still a plane and i hadnt extruded it. i uploaded pics to my blog http://fishfunk.blogspot.com/

thx Ninjitzue! i dont kno several things about blender, such as what a loop is and i managed to figure out how to save my mesh un-rendered images. look at the pics in the link and let me kno what you think.
ElectricBlender and Ninjitzue thank you so much for replying!! the sharp edges during subsurf helps in alot of places where i want it to be pointy with having to sub-divide. and how to i simple sub-divide? and what r loops? im sorry, i am really a new to this for modeling and shaping. o and ive got my mesh images saved but in order to upload them i have to post a link?? whats with that?
No problemo, we were all there once lol When you add a subsurf modifier if you click where it says “Catmull-Clark” you will see a second option of simple subdividing. To get pics on here you can upload them by clicking the “advanced” button and using the form there to attach them to your post
And since you’re new to this it would probably be well worth checking out the documentation and tutorials on the wiki http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Main_Page I’ve been using blender for a while now and i’m still learning new stuff from the wiki, aswell as reinventing the stuff I already know, hope this helps
Ninjitzue- thank you thank you thank you!! that site is amazing! finally here are a few pics of the knife. this is the first real 3d project ive undertaken without a tutorial so plz criticize!! o! and i need help with coloring in blender. something i kno NOTHING about!! i mean i get the whole colorband thing, but how do you color different parts of a mesh different colors? o and i did the narrowing of the knife handle using the Bkey alot, and vertices :P. is that normal? or is there an easyer way?

it is quite nice. you may want to look into the edgesplit modifier to get some sharper edges
thx!! lol i just turned it on and fiddled with it and it looked really weird!! but i will actaully learn how to use it via tutorials!! o and this is just the the knife in edit mode bcuz i rly am curious if im using too many verts, just for future prjects.

The topology you have right now is not really so good, it should follow the shape of the knife like this, you can do it easily by adding a new object and turning on retopo while in editmode. It will then automatically snap your vertices to the surface of any other object
I like the design of the knife - very elfish. Keep at it dude!
Jorzi- i looked up retopo, finally found the button and turned it on, but i was wondering. waht should object should i be retopoing (lol) the vertices to? a copy of the knife? a large plane or cube? o thx kbot!! now that you mention it, it kinda does!
i hadnt noticed. maybe ill use that.
Wow your knife looks amazing! I def couldnt have made something that good looking my first go around. I agree about the topology but its hard to make a nice topology especially at first. Best of luck.
thank you radialronnie for the tut, i doubt i would have been able to do it without and Jorzi, once again, i would have died if you hadnt shown me how to redo the topology.i did the retopo’d it with a much better edge flow, but i think i did it wrong, i mean its clearly not done, im going to make it more shaped with more verts once i add the shape and such i want (bevel the blade) but i think i did something wrong when i redid the topography. see the pics to see what i did and plz just request different angles or anyhting and i will happily oblige. thank you radialronnie for the tut, i doubt i would have been able to do it without
and Jorzi, once again, i would have died if you hadnt shown me how to redo the topology and gracias to ElectricBlender!!
this is only my first time modeling something without a in depth tutorial

Forgot to say the design is really cool, and I’m glad I could help you out:eyebrowlift: Now you only need to add faces and mirror it so you have a whole knife and then maybe tweak the thickness a bit.
