I was inspired to make progress on this again a few days ago, after seeing the work other 3d artists are doing with more cartoonish ponies.
What I hope to be one of the last main modeling hurdles was finished. The eyes and ears were resized and the eye socket rebuilt, after having a chance to see horses up close this summer. I also did a minor adjustment to the chest area, adding slightly more geometry so that when it comes time to rig and weight paint properly, it doesn’t deform. For comparison here’s the previous model on the left, newer on the right.
With these adjustments done to the face and body, I hope to finally make headway on uv unwrapping, texture work, and the start of weight painting to fine tune the rig in preparation for posing, and potentially animation.
Hi so sorry if this is late I love your model but I wanted to know what tutorial/s you followed from start?I want to create my own horse game and really would love to follow your steps
I did not follow any one tutorial. I learned how to box model with various images as reference, and studied topology through pictures and preexisting models. Best advice I can give is to follow muscle curvature and don’t add unneccessary detail through polygons when you can do it just as well through texture work- You want your model to be seen and your game to run smoothly.
Not a modeling update but a suggestion of what’s to come.
At some point, this horse will be the base for a series of generalized breed shapes. A heavy horse, a light horse, a pony and a mini. I finally learned how shape keys can deform along a timeline, which means there will soon be a series of horses that use the same mesh and UV [and potentially weights and bones if I can dig deeper on this!]
