Wireless LAN

Has anyone ever setup one? where you also could share an internet connection? it involved changing mac adress or something to make it work…
Has anyone done such a thing before?

we’ve got a WAN setup at my house. We have a main computer connected to a network switch, a dsl router and a wireless access point. Then we’ve got three computers around the house that connect to that for the internet. I don’t know heaps about it though, my brother set it up.

I’ve set it up recently here,

We’ve got a main server that acts as a gateway. We’ve got a basic switch hooked up to it trough which 3 other computers and our wireless access point connect. Then I’ve got my laptop which uses the wireless accesspoint to connect trough.

I never did anything with MAC addresses though, the wireless network is secure because it doesn’t broadcast it’s name, and because it uses 64-bit encoding.

I do this stuff all the time at work. My home is set up for wireless and wired networking.

If you’re having a problem or just have a question, I’d be happy to try to help.

ive got wireless internet in my house, and its cool because i can take my laptop anywhere and use the internet, or at least SUPPOSEDLY!! i can hardly get a signal to my desktop computer and it SUCKS!

buy a wireless router (~$200 US, some sell for $100, netgear is good)

set it up, CHANGE THE PASSWORDS!

read the docs, that is about it, your dsl or cable modem plugs into it, and your computers connect through it. Some (I think our netgear one does) act as a wired router (cat 5 cable!) as well as wireless

(and keep in mind that pretty much everything going across wirless is plainly visible to those that listen, also that it can be difficult to get mooching negibors off your network [hence some setups have setup certain mac addresses which can get on, other cards with other mac address simply cannot]. And your contract with your isp may not allow you to have multiple computers on your internet connection [and they don’t want your negibors mooching either])

z3r0 d is right about everything.

But it’s easy to keep your neighbors from sharing your connection. Enable MAC address filtering and follow the instructions that come with your router.

It’s also easy to keep people from snooping your traffic. Enable encryption on the wireless access device and, once again, follow the instructions.

If you run into trouble with either of these things, I’d be happy to walk you through it.

Also, as for ISPs not allowing connection sharing - if you’re on broadband and running through a router, there’s no simple way for them to tell that you’re sharing. The most they can do is try to determine how many computers are behind the router, and that’s only guesswork and the product of their concerted, specific attention. In short: you don’t need to worry about it.

My setup is pretty good, but unfortunately when I try to play games I get 5 second long lag spikes every minute or so. That can be .
For the same reason, apparently, my downloads will randomly close without any warning. I think I’m temporarly losing connection, but the customer support for my router (LinkSys) is abysmal at best. I’d have a better chance at getting help from MS.

manage to fix it…well chello isnt too fond about setting up wireless connections :)…it involves changing the mac adress of the router to the chello modems network one
thanks tho guys

Thought i would repeat that because it is that important. Everyone that doesn’t change the password has it defaulted to “admin”. A relative of mine had me fix her computer and they had someone professionally install the WiFi. Even he left the password at admin.

Sorry, i had to correct you, a WAN is a wide area network, not a wireless area network. The INTERNET is a WAN. A wireless network is still just a LAN.

I’ve got a wireless setup. We have a wireless-b router with a dsl modem. You’re going to need a router for wireless stuff anyways, so you’ll have to get it. Then just hook up your DSL modem or whatever to the router adn you’re set.

It seems like the wireless isn’t consistant, i get random lag spikes a bunch. When I just hooked a CAT 5 cable into the router instead of using the wireless usb adapter it seemed to fix it.

It’s a WLAN actually.

eh, i never said i was an expert on it
although we did just set up a 10m antenna on our roof to boost range. Would that possibly make a difference?

On the contrary:

lol, when i first read that, i had to check back to see if i’d made a typo.

Get decent stuff.

I am currently running on an 8 person shared 1mbit cable connection shared across a WLAN.

I got a Belkin router and I must say it is crap. I have to restart the damn thing at least once a day when the internet becomes inaccessible, and half the time it won’t even let me do that remotely so I have to power cycle it manually.
Never cancels downloads tho, though it does have lag spikes.

What is the reliablity of other people’s routers?

Signal on the other hand is fine (just about).
