Hi, this is a work in progress, the aim is to fully rig and animate the steam locomotion and all the moving parts.
Haha, I saw this just now and look:
Have you finished yours?
Yes these steam engines looks similar but unfortunately i have abended this for luck of references to the way the mechanism works and the connections from the engine to the wheels.
I might have another bash at it when i am free.
Thanks for reminding me of it.
The model was something like this one:
Unfortunately, the “reference artists” in those days had no idea how the mechanism worked, either. So, they did not depict it. They only observed (or, more likely imagined), that there was some kind of “chain drive” between the wheels.
They were probably being paid by the manufacturers of the various cars. Very likely, "that was the actual patent."
In my view, your depiction of the actual contrivance as pictured(!) is as good as it is likely to get, and so you should simply “call it good.” You have ‘realistically’ depicted a historical image that was, fundamentally, ‘unrealistic.’ Call it good.
Thanks for the encouraging words. i am still hoping to find a working model to use as reference. I have this obsession way back from my childhood that i always wanted to know how things work, so i would take objects apart but not always managed to reassemble them back as they were.
I don’t know the model you need and if you already know the link below, but I found this for the Stephenson’s Rocket (this is only 1 page out of 19 total on this model):
At this link there are a lot of references, piece by piece:

Or someone can ask to amazing Jared Owen to make one of his fantastic videos on it…

Thanks, i will see if i can find something similar to my model.
I actually found a railway museum in Teesside Uk that have that engine still working so will plan a visit soon.
