Do you think i have what it takes to be a Game modeler

Is there any more details? I mean, how long have you been modelling for? and how long have you been programming for?

I’ve gone the other way round, studied Computer Sciences, and did a bit of programming in VB/C++, and hated it. I hated how, as a beginner, it would take hours to create a command box with anything in it for C++. The Syntax errors and such are a pain to chase down, and it takes YEARS to be able to create games in c++ (there are other languages you can use that are quicker…google “XNA” for example).

For what takes hours of programming and hundreds of lines of code, takes 2 minutes to a modeller. I’m not the best, infact, most of my stuff sucks - but I do this on the side and something I enjoy. Results are instanteous, instead of hours and hours and hours of work and bug hunting before you see anything.

Honestly, I wouldn’t be a programmer if I had the choices between the two.

I been modling since 2010 winter and i think i’m getting better ;)
Pls i need feedback.

How much time did you spend on that model?

Disclaimer: what follows may be harsh but please forgive me:(

I am not a pro modeler or work in the game industry at all I do 3d modeling because I have a creative spark that I don’t get to express in my day job. Having said that I have modeled for game mods before and the important thing in modeling for games is how detailed you can get in as few vertex’s as possible. Part of the learning process when you start to model is you learn where and how you can get away with using less vertex points and how to cheat and add detail with things other than vertexes or trick the eye into thinking there is detail where there isn’t.

Right now your model from what I can see(pics are small and far away) is not very good, it has potential but you are not going to get into the industry with it. a good modeler could recreate what you have in 30 seconds with less than 100 verts. If you want to get into the industry ASAP I would probably recommend taking some college courses in 3d modeling, they will teach you what you need to know and do it a lot faster than you will learn on your own. This isn’t required though from all my contacts in the game industries as well as posts I have read about getting into the industry the people you need to impress for the most part don’t care about your degree or if you have one at all… they want to see your work, they want to know what you can create if they give you an idea and a computer terminal what kind of magic you can conjure up.

If you have been modeling at a regular pace(spending several hours a week or more) for a year and that is the best you have you need training if you wan’t to get into the industry with in a few years. This is nothing to be ashamed of or look down on yourself for, 3d modeling has a learning curve that looks like something out of fear factor, some people can pick up a 3d modeling program and their brain works in a way that syncs with the program right away, others not so much. This doesn’t make the former a better modeler or a smarter person, just means their brain thought pattern and recognition skills function at a different frequency than those who don’t pick it up as readily.

I hope I have’t discouraged you at all, if you have the desire it is something I fully believe is something anyone can do, if you are young and have time stick with it, trust me my first models in blender were horrid, really really horrid lol, but I stuck with it and now I am creating models that while not great are MUCH MUCH better than where they were when I started, and like most steep learning curves, it is so slow when you start out but then something clicks and you GET “it” and from there your modeling texturing etc all improves from day to day hour to hour even.

So my advice…if you need or want to get into the industry now your best bet…find a good 3d college…if you have time and would rather spend time than money…keep at it read the books watch the tutorials keep experimenting and DONT GIVE UP!

Thanks Animaniac888,Phoenix492,SDSJap and sdsjap thanks for the inspiring speech
i am quite young i will learn programming later I’m going to give modeling/rendering/animation my 95 perecent
(cos i got school) if i ever make a good game i will put your names in the special thanks i wont forget this day Thank you.
Merry christmas and a happy new year.
