World Machine - a good terra generator

Very fast realtime preview, you can save each generated layer texture, and you can use in Blender. Free version avaiable with 512x512 resolution of the maps.

This is a fast try with Blender:

hmm, nice work endi. Might have to give to give the soft a try.

Ah, the output is heightfield only. No geometry. Which isn’t all bad but blender can’t create geometry directly from a displacement map so you have to tweak ground placement a lot. I did manage to get color from the sreen output too, maybe there’s a way to save directly.

To get real geometry in Blender, save the output in Worldmachine as Terragen format, import this in Terragen and save it again in .ter format to make it readable for the Ter2Blend script. This script reads the .ter file and converts it to real geometry.

quite honestly what amazes me here is the possebility they put into the app to deform or simulate the switch in direction of soil layers.

i never saw that before.

Mini tutor for this picture above:
-make a terrain with World Machine or load an example
-learn WM and save two tga, height map and another (for example river lines)
-use the height map for displacement on a plane
-use another map for stencil, and use two ground textures

I used this world machine software to create the landscape for this work. Exported it to Terragen and then imported it into blender.
