WWII plane: FW-190 (New Highres MPEG)

http://petter.ms/forum/fw190.gif

This is my first model in Blender (not using Wings3D or LightWave as usual). The texture was made from a template from http://www.il2skins.com/?action=display&skinid=3998. The bumpmap you see isnt really a bumpmap, but faked and embedded onto the actual diffuse map. Can be seperated into 2 maps later on (if I am not using the model for realtime issues).

Still working with Photoshop, I’ll just need some time to jump onto Gimp.

Angelina will get some attention soon too, but right now I am into planes.

30 min on texture, 2-3 hours modeling… so far

Looks good. Thogh maby a bit jagged at the edges. When r u gonna add colour?

skating kow: I hope soon  but first some more geometry, I guess it is way too lowpoly still.

Here is the schematic view of the FW-190 A-4 I am using:

Convert to TGA before using in Blender. 1 pixel on the image = 1 cm of the plane in the real world.

Edit: Never mind, GIF works too.

A nice way of getting the proportions right is to trace the shape of the cross-sections, and then rotate them 90 degrees afterwards to raise the body… if that makes any sense… The cross-sections in the drawing seem to be slightly off for some reason, but it gives a good basic shape.

Nice work there chief

This question is only half related to this thread (so I may well start another one), have you got anymore of those top notch schematics, or could you point me in the direction of where to find them. I’ve spent loads of time searching for various bits and pieces like that and found them very hard to find.

Cheers,

Sam.

The one above is a compilation of various drawings.

Very slow, but loads of plane schematics: http://penio.narod.ru/

It’s worth the wait…

Many thanks petterms, an excellent resource for the patient!

Second FW-190 model (based on a different technical drawing than the first), 32 points per cross section instead of 16 as on the first one

It is quite difficult (atleast for me  to work with high res models, and then texture them afterwards. Here is another update to the plane:
http://petter.ms/forum/FW-190-A4-2.jpg

I also have some problems with the wing tip…

Perhaps i should go for a lower res and then go subdiv after it has been textured. I’ll see what I do.

Ok. I was wrong i shouldn’t post my opinion at this place. Sorry!!!
:expressionless:

Sorry if I offended you, but I am afraid you are as wrong as anyone can be. There isnt anything nazi about the iron cross (though Luftwaffe used it under WWII)

The Iron Cross is perhaps the best known and historically rich German award. Its tradition dates back to 1813, when King Friedrich Wilheim III of Prussia first instituted the award during the War of Liberation against Napoleon. Though it was supposed to be a campaign medal, it was re-instituted in 1870 for the Franco-Prussian War, and again in 1914 for World War I. The defeat of Germany in that war did not diminish military pride in the long term, and the Cross continued to be a symbol of prestige in the inter-war years.

The German Airforce (LuftWaffe) still use the iron cross as their emblem, but they normally use a morph between the WWI and WWII emblems:

The one item that is considered nazi is the swastika, which I deliberately removed from the plane’s tail.

…that my grandfather didn’t see it.
Great modeling, but “Luftwafe” signs and emblems without any context - i can understand if you place it inside game or war episode:<???

It is a German Focke Wulf 190 A-4 from WWII, how can I not add the Iron Cross and still call it a Focke Wulf?

Something else to think about: When you see a red star, do you get angry or frustrated by that? Did you know that Stalin killed 20 million people?

How can using an icon to portray something in a historically accurate manner be offensive to anyone? It is good to be reminded of history. Having an iron cross or swaztica on a model is VERY different from promoting naziism. Remember this: “THOSE WHO FORGET THE LESSONS OF HISTORY ARE DOOMED TO REPEAT THEM”

thank you, you made me laugh.

first saying that such things might offend someone and then saying that he might better make a scene about pearl harbour.

about the plane:

look forward to seeing the plane finished, it already looks great

A FW-190 at Pearl Harbour would be a different sight for sure

I’m talking about scene not about “big red dot/ or sun” :-? .
But thanks for definition.

Anyway i said modeling is great.

Now look at number of Your posts! :o

The War.

Isn’t it good topic for WC?

I’m talking about scene not about “big red dot/ or sun” .
But thanks for definition.

I know. Do you have the number of how many German fighters attacked Pearl Harbour?

Do you mean about japan soliders with german pasports?

Hey petterms looking good so far, and working with hi-res I found its much easier if I model the whole object and then cut into different parts. My La has some 11 parts such as body, tail & rudder, elevators, wings, and the wings and elevators are cut in halfs (top and bottom) and its still UV mapped. If you work this way in time it gets easier to do more complex work.

What kind of problems. One thing I see (but might just be the angle of the camera) is that the wings look a little flat.

Are you UV mapping? If so I found that in some times my La-7 subdiv makes the uv mess up, but with Hi-Res you can just tell it to set smooth.

Keep up it up!

if anyone is looking for blueprints from vehicles to planes to weapons and a whole load of other stuff try:
http://www.onnovanbraam.com
or
http://www.suurland.com/
they have planty of blueprints for most types of things

Here is the 3rd or 4th or something version of the model (I tend to scrap models I am not satisfied with and start over, instead of trying to tweak a bad starting point).

http://petter.ms/forum/FW-190-A4-4.jpg

I am currently working on the tail of the plane, and when that is in place I will make the canopy and interior cocpit.

Thanks for the good tips ADL7! I will try that approach when UV-mapping it. Btw, how do I quickly stitch the plane up again? I dont want to merge every point by hand (when mirroring and cutting up for easier UV-mapping).

Another 2 hours of work and tada:
http://petter.ms/forum/FW-190-A4-5.jpg

I love Blender, Blender is my best friend. Well, almost

A question for you all, how do I stitch loads of vertecies together without going through each single pair? In LightWave it is possible do a “merge all points that are nearer than X units to eachother”, anything like that in Blender? If not, I hereby request it

I need to split it up for simpler UV mapping and afterwards “glue” it back together again.

Any clever stuff on this issue ADL7 ?

Found the remove doubles to remove the middle seam. Still lots to learn on texturing and UV mapping though.
