I have been building a rig for a Blanka character I have been making. I have x-axis symmetry enabled for the rig, yet only the ones side has bones. This is happens mainly in the limbs. How do I mirror the bones from say the right side to the left side? Also why might x-axis symmetry might not work?
Is there any quick ways of weighpainting available? I know there is enveloping but I am not sure about what extra bones you need to add. And can you store rig poses?

Yes, when parenting the armature to the mesh . So Ctrl-P ->Make Parent? - To Armature -> Create Vertex Group ? - From Bone Heat … or if you just use the Armature modifier only, ho into Weight Paint Mode for the mesh (after going into Pose Mode for the armature first) then select all deform bones and W -> Apply Bone Heat Weights to Vertex Groups .
And you can store rig poses as single frame “Actions” in the Action Editor .
So how do you mirror bones. Shift E only works if your building new bones.
Well that’s the way you should have started to build your rig … If you want to mirror your existing rig you will have to go into bone Edit Mode and Shift-D and duplicate all the bones you want to mirror and then hit Ctrl-M and then X to mirror along the X axis … after that you might have to go and manually change the names from something like bone.001_L (hopefully you have put in the L/R suffix/prefix in) to bone_R to have the L/R symmetry … If you had used Shift-E when extruding from the axial bones to make the limbs all the naming stuff and the L/R suffix sdding would have been automatically generated for you …
