XV th century Castle Open Fire

Hi,
Some weeks ago, I started to study around making a realistic animated wood fire with Blender. I found a method using displacement textures, softbody and complex textures with no less that 9 layers ! Some video fof the early trials are available in the WIP sections, and I will put on line a video of the final versions as soon as it will be rendered.

After playing with fire, I decided to include it in a complete scene, and I have choosen to create a castle open fire of the XV th century :

You can view it in full resolution by clicking on the image on this page :

As it is supposed to be a night shot, it is better to look at it without too much light casting on your screen, or you will find it very dark and details will not be visible.

Comments and critics are welcome.

Hi Roubal. It looking real fire, Have you made any animation with it? Please show?

Hi Kkrawal ! How are you ?

Yes, some video are available in the WIP section , but it is not the most recent version. A 600 frames rendering is currently running. I will get the result tomorrow, if everything is correct. Here is the link of the WIP:

Nice real looking fire. Great work. I have done a little fire work in Blender.237a but now in the latest version its giving problem.
My Old Firework is here

In fact, I discovered that until we’ll have a good fire and smoke simulator in Blender, particles are not the best way for making fire. My flames are made of several flat meshes with Displace modifiers applied on them. The Disp texture uses an empty moving on Z axis as reference. I also use Softbody for natural and random moving, with a Wind device blowing vertically. I use 9 layers in the fire texture, and the flames have an alpha UV texture on them to avoid sharp shapes. An alpha cloud texture is also displaced by an empty, and several textures are used to simulate the rising hot gas. A blend texture with color gradient is used to get the color variation from blue to red and yellow.

The flames are shadeless and have a very low Emit factor, but they are lit by several lamps. These lamps are vertex parented to some vertices at the tip of the flames, so they move with the fire.

I have added few rising and falling sparks, as well as some slight smoke with particles and halos.
The surrounding meshes are set to react as deflectors for particles.

I love the lighting and stills look fab, but the movement isn’t quite right. It looks like strips of paper above a fan. Inspired idea though, I’m sure it has a future.

Hi,

New picture, focussed on the candel, with Dof :

You can get the picture in 1280x1024 by a click on the image on this page :

Hi, This project is finished. There are still few problemes here and there, but they can only be seen in very close up,and would not be noticeable in a movie. This said, I hate leaving these kind of details in the state, but I fear I can’t spend much more time on this scene. Maybe I will do some corrections later if I find a moment.

So, you will find an animated sequence available in many formats, at the bottom of this page :

I have noticed that the visual quality depends of the player used. VLC gives a good result in average. QuickTime players often add a green tint…

In native format, the contrast and light is very good on all my PC and screens, but strangely, once encoded in various formats,I get different contrast and brightness on each machine !

These difference are mailny visible in low light scenes… and it is the case here.
I would like to show the master in Motion JPEG V3 1280x1024, but the file is so heavy : around 500MB. It is good as well compressed at 200 MB, but still too heavy for uploading (upload is much slower than download).

If it is too dark, I let you tweak the parameters of your Player… sorry !

Philippe.
