XviD

Has anybody here ever encoded something with XviD? It’s like DivX, except it’s completely free and open source. And from my personal experiences, it encodes with much higher quality and smaller file size than DivX. (I had a 5.44 MB uncompressed AVI file, and compressed with DivX, it got to 4.01 MB. I encoded it with XviD, it got to 2.8 MB. The quality was much higher, too IMO.)

These are just my personal experiences though. If you’ve tried it before, let me know what you think. If not, try it out. It think it’s really good.

The Official XviD website | NOTE: You won’t find a binary download here, just the source code for XviD. To download a binary, go here.

hey i TOTALLY agree Xvid is way cooler than Divx

and for DECODING both of them as well as WMV, MPEG etc… i sugest you get FDDshow filters.

FDDshow decodes more efficiently than the actual CODECS (e.g. official ones), but can’t encode the movies.

but yeah i totally agree about Xvid being way better, its so much easier to use and more stable (well for me i find it is)

i just downloaded xvid then, thanks for the link btw, and it doesn’t really seem that much better.
I had a 9mb video clip:
xvid got it down to 440k
divx got it down to 320k

both had no apparent loss on quality

i’m not totally convinced yet though, i only tried it on this one thing. I’ll give it a try later on something of decent length.

hmm i have never tried xvid but i know that divx relies heavily on the settings for file size/quality. Maybe i should give xvid a try…
