Yafray and windows (glass)

Not the OS
I am trying to get a render of light coming in through a window casting shadows and lighting up a room. I want the window and curtains to cast shadows. This is a common real world thing you see all the time. I am having a hard time beating Yafray into compliance. J/k. I started playing around with this because of this thread.

I found you need a photon lamp for the light coming in from the window. if I use GI the shadows go bad.
I will share some results soon also my settings. Any one with some test please post them rendes and settings.
( I lost the link but there was a nice file hosting site for .blends set up by someone on BlenderArtist.org a sheep comes to mind?)
I will post a test as soon as it renders. .blend also.

One of the bigger disappointments with Yafray. Simply put, direct light can’t go through a traceable material. The workaround to this is to get the caustics to look like the light. Set your photon light up with tons of photons, (like 300,000 to 1,000,000), set depth to 7 or better and blur to 0.5.

Or you can go cheesier and just turn off the traceable in the glass material.

Hi!

Thanks for all the replies so far. I’m trying to render the scene with an area Light. You said only squares work in yafray … that would explain why i never saw them before. i only tried rectangles.

I put the actual blend-File on my server. Maybe you can have a look and tell what to do better. Thanks a lot!

sorry wrong thread … ashamed

nice link Alvaro
I will post some pics later today of my test. I cant seem to get GI to work right.
At-man
I think you need more Photons I looked at your .blend and it looks like you have it set to 150 in the GI panel should 150 thousand.
This is with no GI and low settings all around.
Second pic is with GI and low settings. the problem I have is I lose the shadows from the area lights that are infront of the windows.

Whe Full GI is used, Yafray arealights and spherelights (point lights with radius) work just as photon emitters, therefore you will need to create direct light sources if needed.

That’s why in Full GI examples, arealights are used in conjunction with ‘emit’ objects.

These questions are a bit explaned in yafRay FAQ.
