Yafray the system Eater, part Two: COMPILING

Hi,

since after a long time CVS of Yafray way updated.
On one hand hand this is something to be happy about
on the other hand it reminds me on the following problem:

Compiling/installing Yafray take a lloooooonnnng time and
the machine is heavily swapping while doing so (no other
task is running).

I havent find out what the reason is for this.
After waiting for about one hour I killed that task.

My system is a linux 2.6.11.8 box with an AMD XP 2400+
The command I issue to build yafray is
“scons install”

How can I make the compiling/installing working in
a normal time and without such a high footprint?

Keep blendering!

how much RAM do you have?
Also, if you check in top, how much memory are scons and gcc taking?

Hi phlip

Thanks for your reply!

The system has 512MB Ram and 3.4 GByte Swap.

I compiled (tried to…) Yafray again and run “vmstat 1”
simultanously captureing the output into a logfile.
The most time the compile process hangs on libsunsky.so
or sunsky.so…

After one hour I killed that job. The last lines of the vmstat
command are:
procs -----------memory---------- —swap-- -----io---- --system-- ----cpu----
r b swpd free buff cache si so bi bo in cs us sy id wa
1 4 667848 4924 6160 4600 2908 0 4332 0 1308 537 3 2 0 95
0 4 667616 5308 6004 5788 1324 0 3872 0 1379 460 0 2 0 98
0 2 667612 5260 6096 6496 3568 0 5952 60 1497 755 1 3 0 96
0 2 667612 5828 6084 5060 2296 0 2296 28 1529 512 1 2 0 97
0 3 667612 5124 6032 4644 1512 0 2080 0 1409 407 1 1 0 98

BESIDE the compile process the X-.Server, icewm two shells in mrxvt and the system tools (nothing special -
no webserver, no database no other “big thing”…)
were running.

Compiling other big projects like gimp, firefox,X,blender and such are no problem at all (blender takes 11 minutes and it is easy to do other things in parallel…while yafray
is compiling the system is “locked”…)

Thank you very much in advance for any help or hint !

Keep blendering!
