Comments and ideas in order to improve this one are welcome, even if I don’t have much time in my hands.
Interestingly, I’m not an Ubuntu user (but a Mandriva one :D), but someone on a french board needed a custom Ubuntu logo and I ended working on this wallpaper
This is not much work: 20 mn only for modeling (Bezier curves), shading (color glass material preset), illumination (Full, low quality), photons (500,000 photons, mid-high Blur level), lighting (0.25 radius lamp with two samples) and rendering. I’m not an advanced Yafray user (apart some tests I did, this is my very first render, but i’m a blender user since 1999) and I never tried edditing the XML files
Obviously, I’ll produce a better quality/size when I’ll be done with comments and critics.
please try, I don’t have much free time, so I’d like to render a high quality / big size version only when i’m 100% sure to be done with it.
perhaps I can’t remember correctly the year, then. If i recall correctly, I started with Blender v1.68/1.68a. I’m not sure it qualifies me as an “earliest Blender user”, though .
Simple often makes a stronger statement than complex.
It think it’s great especially for a background as any icons/apps you might have that live on the sides of the screen won’t be covering anything interesting.
héhé! I think you should get yours tomorrow evening please be a little more patient
And thank you for your nice comment (but I notice that no one rates this thread. There’s no rating for WIP topics?)
I use Ubuntu… I have downloaded you background, but I’m sorry to say I’ll probably not going to use it. It’s to 3d (not that I would expect anything else with blender) for me… Don’t know why. Nice work though.
And why are you making a ubuntu background if you aren’t an user? Do you use another distro?
Ok, here is a crit to post pro for you: Your render looks nice, but sometimes, copyrights destroy the overal impression. I don’t want to say, you should skip it, but you should at least try to color it and make it fit into your scene a bit better.
Some ideas: tint it with grey, so it is slightly different to the ground. UV map it or even use displacement.
As well, you may simply tint it grey and place it as a small copyright with a height of lets say 10 pixels onto the bottom.
Copyrights are not to be seen directly, they are for saving your rights. If you have one on your picture, that is visible and someone, who copies it, he has to take it into account, but the ordinary user does not want to see it in that way. I, for my part, like your rendering, but I would not use your finished picture, just because this copyright is really too big and destroys the overall impression.
Because I’m open-minded? I like the Ubuntu original logo, and I tried to build one in 3D for someone, this is why. Most likely it is because I wanted to try some nice caustic effects with Yafray and I had a good “ground” for this, here… By the way, I use the Mandriva 2006 distro
Good point. I’ll probably shade the lower part of the pic so that the copyrights stands less evidently from the picture. I’m also pondering about releasing any rights on these pictures (along with the blend sources, it’s more close to my ethical than copyrights anyway) so please bare with these copyrights mentions one or two days more, until I take a final decision
