Yet Another Washroom Tap

Another tap, the design itself is not my own, I did the pictures for a friend:

ps: can anyone find the small bug on the last one?

Rendered in Yafray.

Thats pretty good, but I wouldn’t call it finished. Crits:

First, the water looks frozen. It’s to perfect and clear.

Second, it looks like your mesh has too many verts. Can you see the wrinkles and scrunching? Try to cut back on them. Use as few verts as possible to define the shape you want.

Third, did you use an AngMap for this? If not, you should put one in and the reflections will look more realistic.

Finally, I love the lighting and that wall texture. It seems very natural.

Good work!

That IS a great wall texture. Any chance sharing it? Or is it simply an image map?

reaper

the design and modeling is great,
im not sure about the red-blue colors, they look unnatural, and the reflections are a little bit messy.

good work.

the wall looks very realistic… reflections are a bit weird

I’m thinking that giving the subsurf level a little bump may fix the funky reflections.

Thanks for the comments!
The reflections are from a HDR probe (yes, an angular map), the “scrunching” is because of the blind spot of the angular map, where the pixels converge together. I’ll need to rotate it so it doesn’t appear in the reflection.

The wall is a simple texture, a good one though, 1600*1200 and very sharp. The wall is one of the reasons for Yafray, you will never get this kind of sharp texture in Blender’s internal renderer… yet.

well… all very nice. but who has such a wall in the bathroom???
it would be soaking and mouldy (sp?)
but hey… thats me criticising that unimportant stuff.

the bug? well the thread of the screw thingy goes in the wrong way… turning clockwise should thighten it.

wah_tak: hehe, yeah, that was the bug, it’s a “leftie” thread, a little accident.

Funny, but many of the modern bathroom designs in broshures, and an exhibition that I looked at before designing the taps had bare walls, with only paint on. No tiles, no nothing. I have no idea how they will look a few years after the oh-so modern-design-conscious buyer gets his bathroom rebuilt with bare walls…

I found the “bug”. The threads are not correct. They are either not threads at all (just ordinary convalescent rings) or reverse threads.

Also, and mainly, why is no water flowing from the threads?

well, i guess thats the thing to attach the shower to. and by pulling that knob up, water flows thorugh there.

and yea… you could work a bit on the water…

  • add an irregular bump map, so you can’t see through the water clearly
  • move in or out some of the vertical edges of the water-‘cylinder’
  • do sone fractal subdividing
  • and then maybe also twist it a bit at the top.

i can only say it again… observe how it is in real life… turn on your tap!

Heh. I like the water, even if it isn’t very realistic. The bubbles are a nice touch. Looks like it’s tapped into a giant vat of hair gel.
