Yet More ATI issues w Xpress 200M

I’ve read many posts about the ATI/OpenGL problems. I’ve still got problems running Blender and though I’d post to see if I can get any help.

I’ve got the same issue as many others with ATI cards. Blender runs really slow after a few minutes. Menus, keystrokes, and mouse movements take some time to react. Needless to say, this makes Blender unusable for me. Here is a brief list of what I’ve tried to fix it:
-Changed to 16 bit color mode…Didn’t help
-Changed my OpenGL settings to boost performanc…Didn’t help
-Tried download Catalyst Drivers 3.9 and used the opengl driver from that to run Blender…Blender crashed at startup using that driver (but my video card is much newer and probably isn’t supported by those drivers anyway)

Anyway, here’s my hardware. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Compaq Persario R4012US Laptop (PCI-E Bus)
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1256 MB DDR333
ATI Radeon Xpress 200M w/128MB VRAM
80GB HDD

If anyone has figured out a way to get Blender running on a rig similar to this, please let me know.

TY,
Jason

PS - I built Blender from source code using MSVC 7.1. It’s version 2.37a

what catalyst versions have you tried? like new ones…

I’m running catalyst 5.4 with the radeon 9600se and don’t have the slowdown problems [windows xp]… 5.4 is far from the most recent version, but not from before the bug… it does seem odd to me that even the new chipsets randomly have this issue.

Today I installed the latest drivers (Catalyst 5.8) and still no luck. Same issues as before. Previously I was using the drivers supplied by Compaq (no idea what version). I just checked with ATI and Catalyst 5.4 does support my card so I’ll give those a shot and see what happens. Did you have to adjust any of your settings to get them to work fine?

Same results using the 5.4 drivers. Any ideas anyone?
