Your laptop ? Making a list of laptops running Blender.

Hi all,

Ive been looking for a desktop replacement laptop on many different 3d apps forums over the last few days. And there wasnt much useful info from people as most threads decended into fanboys discussion about i5 vs i7.

To make things easier for me and for you, I would like if you (who have a laptop) can write down the:

  1. Name and number of the laptop.
  2. Video card (ATI or Nvidia)
  3. RAM amount and what kind (DDR3 or DDR2)
  4. CPU (Intel or AMD)
  5. If you use other 3D apps (Maya or 3ds MAX)
  6. What you like and what you dislike about it.
  7. Support issues ? (if any)

(Just try to write down as much as you can/want to,the more the better of course)

This I belive would be most useful for people looking for a Blender laptop. As I can then just look up the different models and make my choice.

Thanks for your time !

  1. Name and number of the laptop. HP Pavilion dv5
  2. Video card (ATI or Nvidia) ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 (256MB)
  3. RAM amount and what kind (DDR3 or DDR2) 4GB DDR3
  4. CPU (Intel or AMD) AMD Turion II Dual Core (2.4Ghz)
  5. If you use other 3D apps (Maya or 3ds MAX) Just Blender 2.56 beta
  6. What you like and what you dislike about it. Like: Well, it rocks, and the webcam is very good. Dislike: It came with Windows 7 pre-installed (SO I fixed it by installing Ubuntu Linux  )
  7. Support issues ? (if any) The ATI proprietary drivers don’t play very well with Ubuntu, so I have to use the open-source drivers, but they work fine so no biggy.

Thanks DanaLou !

You just killed an old myth of mine that ATI is to be avoided like the plague. (I had a very bad experience years ago with ATI.)
So far my eyes have been on DELL or HP, but havnt made me mind up just yet.

Keep it coming folks dont be shy!

  1. Name and number of the laptop. Macbook Pro 15"
  2. Video card (ATI or Nvidia) NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512 MB & NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
  3. RAM amount and what kind (DDR3 or DDR2) (2x4 GB) 8 GB DDR3
  4. CPU (Intel or AMD) Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz
  5. If you use other 3D apps (Maya or 3ds MAX) Modo
  6. What you like and what you dislike about it. What I like: Everything. It’s a Mac. It’s awesome. Software and hardware are both exquisite.
  7. Support issues ? (if any) None.

Thanks William,

Are you using a Numpad USB?

No, but I plug it into a 27" LED Cinema Display with a full size low profile aluminum keyboard, and a Wacom Intuos.

Yep, that is a problem with Macbook Pros and Blender, no Number Pad. The backspace is called “DELETE” and there is no actual delete key.

That is why when you press the “DELETE” key, on a Macbook Pro, nothing happens. You have to use the alternate X key to delete.

Hey Atom,

Can you please put down your laptop details if you got one?

Thank you

  1. Name and number of the laptop. HP pavilion tx1332la
  2. Video card (ATI or Nvidia) Geforce 6150 Go
  3. RAM amount and what kind (DDR3 or DDR2) DDR2 2gb
  4. CPU (Intel or AMD) Turion 64bit
  5. If you use other 3D apps (Maya or 3ds MAX) Inventor and 3D Max
  6. What you like and what you dislike about it. The geforce motherboard sucks, this series of laptops is well know of death caused by overheat.
  7. Support issues ? (if any) Overheat, made my own laptop base with several fans (noisy), GLSL support is a bit limited, but nothing to do about it.
  1. Name and number of the laptop. Macbook Pro 15"
  2. Video card (ATI or Nvidia) NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M
  3. RAM amount and what kind (DDR3 or DDR2) 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
  4. CPU (Intel or AMD) Intel Core i7 2.66 GHz
  5. If you use other 3D apps (Maya or 3ds MAX) Blender
  6. What you like and what you dislike about it. What I like: Super stable…faaast…and easy to use…Dislike:I had to get a usb keyboard with numpad for fast use of blender…but even without it…u can change settings in Blender to help.
  7. Support issues ? (if any) None.
  1. Name and number of the laptop. Euronote 740
  2. Video card (ATI or Nvidia) None
  3. RAM amount and what kind (DDR3 or DDR2) 256MB DDR
  4. CPU (Intel or AMD) Intel Pentium II 366MhZ
  5. If you use other 3D apps (Maya or 3ds MAX) Nope.
  6. What you like and what you dislike about it. It’s a bit slow. But good enough to write scripts and browse Blender code.
  7. Support issues ? (if any) Well the charger is held together with electrician’s tape, and there is a chunk of plastic missing from the body.
  1. Name and number of the laptop. Asus G51

  2. Video card (ATI or Nvidia) Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M with 1 GB of dedicated memory

  3. RAM amount and what kind (DDR3 or DDR2) 4GB DDR2

  4. CPU (Intel or AMD) Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.0 GHz

  5. If you use other 3D apps (Maya or 3ds MAX) Blender, Aurora

  6. What you like and what you dislike about it. Rivals many desktop PC’s. Blender runs great. It’s cool most of time (even when running heavy applications). Great GLSL support. It can run Crysis (on high settings) at a steady 30 fps all while running on batteries. Downside: it only has a battery life of 1 hour and 20 minutes (at best).

  7. Support issues ? (if any) Sometimes static electricity can cause the PC to “start up by itself”. On average, it happens about once a week (during the dry winter season). It’s not annoying or anything, but…

  1. Name and number of the laptop. Dell Precision M6300
  2. Video card (ATI or Nvidia) Nvidia Quadro FX 1600M
  3. RAM amount and what kind (DDR3 or DDR2) 3.4 GiB DDR2. Video RAM is 512 MB
  4. CPU (Intel or AMD) Intel® Core™2 duo CPU
  5. If you use other 3D apps (Maya or 3ds MAX) Trained in Maya but not on this laptop
  6. What you like and what you dislike about it. Very large laptop, which I like, although the LCD screen is overly-gamma (washed out) and I don’t think the levels in Nvidia settings actually fixes it. Have not been able to get bluetooth to work under Ubuntu on this laptop.
  7. Support issues ? (if any) If Dell find out I’ve installed Ubuntu on it, would invalidate the warrantee.

Thanks so far everyone! Much appreciated, its great stuff to read.

Please keep it coming if there is more out there !?

  1. Name and number of the laptop. Dell Vostro 1320
  2. Video card (ATI or Nvidia) Nvidia GeForce 9300M GS
  3. RAM amount and what kind (DDR3 or DDR2) DDR 2 4GB
  4. CPU (Intel or AMD) Core 2 Duo 2.53
  5. If you use other 3D apps (Maya or 3ds MAX) Not at the moment
  6. What you like and what you dislike about it. Like dimensions and weight 13’’ Display
  7. Support issues ? (if any) None
  1. Name and number of the laptop. Asus Eee PC 900a
  2. Video card (ATI or Nvidia) Intel 915GML
  3. RAM amount and what kind (DDR3 or DDR2) 1GB
  4. CPU (Intel or AMD) Intel Atom 533 MHz
  5. If you use other 3D apps (Maya or 3ds MAX) Nope
  6. What you like and what you dislike about it. Likes: Tiny, portable, long battery life Dislikes: Slow SSD, weak cpu. I run Blender 2.56 on ubuntu lucid, and the norman rig actually works at 12 fps!!! This is of course not my main computer, but i did some python scripting on it during the christmas holidays.
  7. Support issues ? (if any) None

collecting this kind of information is indeed a very good idea! i just think this would be better in a list on a wiki (http://wiki.blender.org) or something for those reasons:

searching for a specific model is easier
it won’t get abandoned as easy as a thread here, even if it’s not very up to date.

d’you agree?

How do you find all this info, like what type you laptop is, graphics card, RAM, CPU etc?

I have a laptop, but i’ve got no idea what type it is. It’s just a laptop in my world.

Not sure I agree for serveral reasons.

  1. I never use wiki.blender.org only by “accident” or if im pointed in that direction.

  2. I have this strong feeling that if I asked people to go to wiki.blender.org to type in their details, then most people wouldnt bother. And I want people to bother  by making it as simple and easy as possible. In this case by pressing Reply with Quote and type it in rite away. Its also my impression that many different kind of blender users (casual and hardcore) are cruising through here more than at wiki.blender.org which means more people and diversity which = more different laptops i know would run blender.

  3. This list is not made to last that long. Its just to get an snapshot of what laptops people use to run blender these days, so I (and hopefully others in the same situation) can check out laptops that they know can run blender. Otherwise I´d had to go to the shops that have the model im potentially interested in buying and ask for permission to run blender off a usb stick just to check. Im not in a position to do that, cos of the shops around and mostly time.

  4. By setting up these simple questions, I avoid most of all a debate of subjective opinions backed up by technical gibberish that dont help me in looking for the laptop I might want. Just wanna know what people use without a: Hey!!! i dont like Macbook pro cos they are overpriced and they suxxx!. That dont help me or others looking for blender laptops.

But if you want to make a list that you keep updating as new hardware comes out, (which means you will have to keep asking people from time to time to update their details) I think is admirable but I wouldnt have the interest nor time to do that.

Would love it if people did this kinda thread every 6 months or once a year.

BTW whats your laptop details ?

  1. Name and number of the laptop. Acer Aspire 4829TG
  2. Video card (ATI or Nvidia) ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 512 dedicated memory (i was searching for the one with 5750, but didn’t found it)
  3. RAM amount and what kind (DDR3 or DDR2) 4GB DDR3
  4. CPU (Intel or AMD) Intel i5 450M @2.4GHz
  5. If you use other 3D apps (Maya or 3ds MAX) Blender 2.56, Gimp, Premier (i have installed maya for students, but never used it)
  6. What you like and what you dislike about it. Looooooong battery. If you switch between the dedicated and integrated gpu, you can reach the 8 hours(with 9 cells battery). It has part of the body in metal, so it disspipate quite well. It’s a 14", and 1,8 kg without battery(2,1 with it). I also connect it with 23" lcd with vga and 50" plasma with hdmi and have no problems. I didn’t payed it too much(important thing :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: )
  7. Support issues ? (if any) Worms Armageddon sometimes has bad colors running with the dedicated gpu D: While in my desktop i have never had problems, with the mobility there are some driver issues, but nothing really problematic. OpenCL (read as SLG) is supported. Really satisfied
