Hello everyone,
As a blender 3d user I decided to make money by selling the images I produce online. 6 years down the line it’s become a bit of an art-form for me.
I’m thinking of making an free open source method to sell blender models/renders. Same as blender’s license.
I ended up producing a special open source image-selling wordpress plugin called symbiostock ( www.symbiostock.com ) and its the same one that runs my website ( www.clipartillustration.com ) as well as many others (170 in fact www.symbiostock.info ).
I’m going to be redesigning it to cater to illustrators particularly, since that is what I understand best. So it’s going to have a nice masterpiece branch specifically for illustrators.
Ideally I’d like to emulate Blender 3d’s branding ( www.blender.org ), as well as Ubuntu’s to a degree ( www.ubuntu.com ) – putting huge emphasis on the open source / community aspect.
The main question I pose to the crowd:
If you could own your own online store which had the ability to sell images as well as models, what features would you want in it?
Use your imagination! Since Blender 3d is our focus, you could suggest something like “I’d like to auto-detect the model’s features such as polygon count, etc”.
Please remember this is open source (free) and this is not a marketing stunt. Symbiostock started in the same way, getting the feedback of it’s users before creating it.
Many of you are python users. This means it may be wiser to use a CMS based out of Django instead of wordpress, since it is python based.
Other things you’ll be able to sell:
- Vectors: eps, ai, svg
- Images: png, jpg
- possibly animations, though that is quite different due to size/complexity.
- Models (.blend primarily, and other types as well.
- Accompanying zips of course.
If you like this idea, keep this thread alive and I’ll keep the goal alive. Otherwise let it sink and I’ll get back to Symbiostock basic.
