What do you feel about political art today?
Is it more OK to express an opinion now — post-Trump — than it was a month ago?
Or do you believe in Art For Art’s Sake?

People have always expressed their opinions through art, it goes back long before the modern CG medium even existed.
I myself am usually not a huge fan of opinionated art pieces (or pieces created for the purpose of being controversial), but there’s little I can do to temper their creation by others.
I’m British. Trump is nothing to me. We have our own issues in the UK.
Contrary to popular opinion, the US is NOT the centre of the world.
So, perhaps you’re like: Got a message — use Western Union?
Makes sense.
But on the other hand … Shakespeare and all his kings. Hemingway and the Spanish Civil War. Picasso and Guernica. Vietnam and a variety of artists. The Cold War and the 808.
While a huge wall seems to separate art from politics right now.
You sure do.
Nope, Britain is! (No Brexit, no Trump.)
Of course it isn’t. The center of the world is made up of an iron-nickel alloy that is approximately 5700 Kelvin.
But seriously, we probably should try to stray away from the topic of politics before this thread devolves into needless arguments like every other political thread.
^Edit: Damn you and your ninja skills, you beat me to the joke.
The main subject here was the use of art to express an opinion (as opposed to just the banned subject of politics).
At least I thought it was.
^I can see your point there. However, even the mention of politics on a non-political forum is all it takes to start a fight these days, especially in more active communities. Just to be safe, it’s best to avoid mentioning it at all.
More on topic: I prefer to use my words to express opinions rather than art, because words provide more clarity and detail than a simple picture. In my opinion, art is better at capturing emotions such as joy and sadness.
As it stands, this thread doesn’t currently violate any forum rules. It would be nice if we could keep it that way.
To the point of the thread… art is art. Some is political and some isn’t. The results of any particular event—political or otherwise—doesn’t change that.
IMO
Artwork also shows technique, skills & human emotions involved through the process of creating, while words are just… words. Meaning if listener is not experienced about the topic in question, thus has only the ability to pretend (play a role) based on it’s intellectual level/skill and logic. Artwork is after all the authors truth, not something one pretended to have made.
IMO politic is in the domain of every citizen and should be open to debate, experiment and testing in every area of civil life because it is involved & influences every act, choice & decision human makes. It is the science/logic/knowledge behind civilized society (even in primitive societies, which are, to surprise of many scholars & politicians, much more open opposed to modern urban).
My biggest problem with “political artwork” is that so much of it is just not very good.
If your own opinions are strong, and strongly biased in one direction or another, then it’s pretty easy to make up something that looks like what’s been done before. (“Meme generators” being by far the easiest.)
But, to come up with an idea that makes an actual social statement that resonates with anyone … that’s very hard.
Sundial; I do not know if memes can even count as art (and it doesn’t matter if it’s political or not).
The vast majority of meme producers take an existing image off the internet and add words to it (and even those are basically just riffs of actual movie lines). If that counts as art, then we have dumbed down the term to the point where it may become meaningless.
>Thinks memes are only just random pictures with captions
>Thinks memes are supposed to be this generation’s version of art
>Truly a perfect 5/7 opinion, fam.
But seriously, believing all memes are used to represent opinions is the same as believing sandpaper is a viable alternative to toilet paper. Memes are like widespread jokes that everybody hears about and tells each other. Nobody really takes memes seriously. Sometimes I wonder how connected this place actually is to the rest of the internet. Then again, that’s partially a good thing because here we can at least have relatively civil discussion here.
I have done some political art/memes on Facebook. Some of it even using Blender like the following which even fooled someone at CNN.

I originally did it for my Halloween themed background.
I would post more of the meme-s I did in Blender but not for fear of moving from the art/process to actual politics as Fweeb pointed out.
But getting back to the discussion, I agree with Ace Dragon. They seem to have gotten worse in content but much less creative. A picture of someone and a funny, scathing or false caption. A good Doonsebury-ish cartoon is rare.
^Link doesn’t work. Also, I don’t believe you about fooling somebody at CNN. You got sources to back that up?
Sorry about the link. It was supposed to be this.
I know it is full of mistakes, but I threw it together in one evening and it looked ok.
As for CNN, try this:
It is in response to a CNN I Report post from October 25. Click on the giant pumpkin picture and you will see my comments. You will probably find all of the stuff I won’t post here.
They were either really nice or I lucked out.
