Youth Rights (CLOSE THIS THREAD!)

Oh man. This is so hilarious.

There is a well-known effect (check out http://www.apa.org/journals/psp/psp7761121.html) wherein people below a certain level of competence are completely unable to recognize or evaluate their own unsuitability to a task, like, oh, driving a car. Or who to have sex with. I’d be willing to say that lack of metacognitive skills, as well as the equally well-known lack of teenage logical decision making abilities http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/teenbrain.cfm is more than enough reason to grant children and teenagers a smattering of abridged rights.

Come on kids. You can’t argue with the APA and the NIH! And if this really upsets you… then it just means that you’re thinking with your amygdala, not your frontal lobes. Have fun!

BTW, the poll should have had a “You’ve got to be kidding me.” option.

BTW, I’m 31.

This is so stupid. A talk about kids’ rights, which leads to sex…
I’m a kid(16, 17 in march) but I think kids shouldn’t have the rights that the adults do. I used to be scared to drive when I was younger, heck, just the thought of me driving would freak me out because I was sure I would wreck the car. Not because I’m stupid, or because I’m careless, but because I wasn’t ready. Now, if there was a law that had said I could get my license when I was 10, and all the other kids around were getting theirs, any kid would get theirs asap because everyone else does. I can’t imagine what would have happened if I started driving when I was 10…
Voting? That’s a laugh. I’m not sure I’m going to vote when I turn 18, let alone 14,12,10,9,etc. Could you imagine a 10 year old voting for the next President of the united States? Ridiculous!
As for sex…

I for one am happy to not have a job(till next spring) no responsibilities, no rights. The only thing I have to do is blend!
and that’s how it should be.

My favorite verse:

He who haseth the gold, maketh the rules.
II Opinions 4:2 :stuck_out_tongue:

The government has the gold, they make the rules.

Hehe…

But the truth is, many adults suffer the same problem. I think I just have general issues with people who don’t use their heads, adults or children. Like those people who desperately pull out in front of you, just to go 15mph under the speed limit. Or the idiots who let their shopping cart slam into your car. Or the kids who walk around the mall and pretend to be thugs and think they’re gonna get girls because their ‘bad’. Or business owners who don’t like you simply becaue you also have a business, and even though you don’t do the same thing they do, they don’t like you because you ‘could’ be competition because you are a propreieter(sp?). Or those in the 40-60 year old age range that went to college for electrical engineering many years ago, and have that attitude that young people are incompetent when it comes to computers if they don’t have the same education level. Or those people who advertise their computer services that they have 20 years of experience in computers and web design, when most of their knowledge is limited because they’ve been in it for 20 years and haven’t kept up.

As kids we have limited rights but no responsibility.
As adults we have more rights but responsibility up the wazzoo!

The good news is we get these rights in due time.
The bad news is they don’t come cheap!

Well, Lord of the Flies may not be based on the book, but the theme of the book is really that everyone is evil, including little children who just popped out into the world.

Not everyone has a hymen btw.

Blend on, and blend well!!!

still…this thread is ridiculous… 8)

wow harkyman! what a way with words! perfectly said =D

OK youngs TRUST me on this: we absolutely DO understand where you’re coming from because we were in that position once ourselves!
I mean I would’ve had a driver’s license at 6 if they had let me!
And from about age 9 if it weren’t for the prudence of others I’d be a granddad like 57 times over! We know, believe me! So then why did we “sell out” you ask? Experience! One of the most precious commodities
there is!

Just hold your horses!
You’ll get your turn!

/me shakes his head…
Only kids could be shortsighted enough to demand equal rights for kids. Think of others.

where would it stop

Yeah…

You probably haven’t seen the short “Cipher In The Snow.” It’s about this kid who dies in the snow, and everyone’s ignored him for the last few years.

That kid was in elementary school. Thus, he was never able to drive, never able to do anything adults can do at their pleasure.

Trust me, I think I know enough about the world to stay in it. I think kids should have the right to say that they’re bored with school because it’s teaching them things they know about, and they know what they’ll need in life… yeah, some kids might do this irresponsibly, but they can prove that they’ll handle it.

Some adults don’t have enough intelligence to get decent jobs in the world. If you’ve ever seen “I Am Sam,” you’ll know what I mean. Notice that in some ways, Sam was smarter than everyone else, Lucy (the kid) was smarter than him, etc. Lucy was probably smart enough to raise him instead of vice-versa.

cubefan, it really does not make sense. Kids do not know enough about this world. Hell, even most of the adults do not.

Why don’t go all the kids to the police, who get the shit beaten out by their parents? Or those who got raped by their beloved daddy (or mommy?) Or those who are ignored and put in front of the TV? Because they are not settled down in this world and cannot handle the situation. They still depend.

Kids should definitely get special rights. The rights to be raised responsible. The right to get teachers, who don’t only know their field, but also how to teach it. Children should have the right to be respected. This is much more important than the right to drink alcohol.

It is very easy to exploit and force children. It happens too much already.

Most of the people go on to tell themselves ‘I am already grown up’ no matter what age.

You get a bit closer to maturity when you realize you will never be.

By the way, you have so many possibilities already. Most of all: you can learn whatever you want to. You have intense access to knowledge. Use that and prepare for being responsible. I can tell you, it can become quite a burden once you cannot go back.

There are so many things that I cannot undo anymore. Others of my age are playing the piano or guitar well, because they had the chance to start it early, while I have to struggle now.

My tutor has a marvelous memory, because he used a few minutes every evening to remember the day chronologically when he was young (a tip of a teacher of his). Everything which needs practise is so much easier to achieve when you are young. It just goes deeper. Practise is much more valuable when you are young.

Cubefan: try to get as many skills into your head and hands as possible. You will benefit from that for a lifetime.

So fully use what you can do and you won’t miss the rest too much.

Dying young is a possibility for all of us.
There are no guaranties in life. Only (we hope) equal chances if we pay our dues.
And you gotta pay your dues.

I-G-N-O-R-A-N-C-E

I’m a teenager, and even I know that youth rights is nothing but a load B.S.

If kids are stupid enough to get drunk, have sex(and get pregnant, or get someone pregnant), or do drugs.

why should they vote, or gamble?

most adults don’t know who to vote for, they know nothing about there government, or whos running. that number is even higher in kids, so why let them vote?

adults can’t even handle gambling, and kids don’t even make that much money, if any at all!!

if you think youth rights is ok, you don’t deserve them.

cubefan, do us all a favour, and think about what you are doing, something may sound good on the surface but at heart, frankly, it’s just a buncha crap.

O-F-F-E-N-S-E
bullshit and crap are interesting arguments, aren’t they?

that sentence has FLORIDA written all over it :stuck_out_tongue:

Martin

Hehehe…

I probably wouldn’t use the right to vote. Too boring.

BTW: For voting/driving, maybe some kind of test could be made.
