Annan is in Scotland. Years ago there was shipbuilding, mainly schooners I think. At the mouth or the river as far as I know... emigrants embarqued to travel to other countries. Also there was ferry service to Liverpool. Over the years the channel gradually became silted up. On the opposite side of the Solway Firth in England Port Carlisle was built about 1820. with a canal to Carlisle. This was eventually filled in and replaced with a train line. I could see very little of this remaining on the internet map, as half buried in the mud and silt . The Solway Firth if fed into by two main rivers the Esk and the Eden. Along the middle of the Solway Firth is the dividing line between Scotland and England. Couples used to run away to Gretna green to get 'married', as on the maps it sems to be a few hundred meters just within the border of Scotland.

I had a look at the animations on small videoes on the Internet and it showed a tall sailing ship with sails slowly manoevering, edging it's way along to moor midstream. The river was in the process of being dredged to allow access to the current day leisure vessels. When moving along the road alongside the quay there were still some old small warehouses still standing and I tried to make a few in the route. The internet is very useful for a close up view of the current state of the old docks. Many now just seem to have become marinas full of lines of small vessels, or abandoned and full of silt. Years ago all these docks must have been a hive of indusry and with dredged channels and docks the depth of the water must have been much deeper.
