Painting with Polygons...

FaradayCage, darn fine work! nice mix of the 2 methods. cool render

Added canvas in The Gimp otherwise straight out of Blender. This was more what I had in mind before I accidentally found the fur effect and got sidetracked

kudos kernond, is that an actual render? Those lines are phenomenal, IMO. Would you mind sharing a blend(its thats actually a render and not a hand drawing)?

And to Domino, again NICE WORK, very nice work, that is such a great implementation, your technique is top notch!

my try…
I’ve duplicated the mesh, with clouds displacement modifiers, and then i’ve mixed in the compositor, where i’ve added some flickering textures.

@blenderificus
Thanks! A person could get lost in all of the different ways these techniques can be applied.

It’s a Blender internal render with some minor node work.

  • the geometry is the result of using the Grease Pencil tool to trace the scene within the camera view
  • converted to curves
  • tweaked curve settings to adjust the resolution, bevel, etc.
  • convert curves to mesh
  • used the sculpt tools to make some minor tweaks
  • from this point, use the basic techniques for “painting with polygons”

That looks good, Domino!

Yeah that gimp canvas works wonders when joined with this technique.

Good one Domino.
Getting a good storybook felling from yours.
Me.I’ve been trying to get that round brush concept art look but I can only get it with sub surfed meshes.

Coder I’m not, but I wonder down the road If python scrips can be made to set parameters for all the different looks that have come up in this thread?

I’ve made a test animation with this techinque:

http://images48.fotosik.pl/175/f108348fb29b877d.jpg

I tried another… this is the rocket from Die Frau im Mond, with toon shaders, UV mapping, the trick from tobias and the freestyle renderer.

There is one thing I can’t figure out… the displace modifier is applied to each object, with it set to normal and object for displacement, tied to an empty (Ob: Empty). I’ve looked at every setting, but when I try to set up my own empty I cannot get the mblur render trick to return differing results with each pass, and the painting with polygons thing doesn’t happen. But if I literally shift-F1 import the empty from the original .blend from tobias, I can make it work. What am I missing?

It sounds like you need to set the Empty to control the texture coordinates in the displacement modifier, and then animate the Empty so the displacement changes on each frame.

I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out what was wrong when I was trying to duplicate this for myself, then I found that I had simply neglected to hit the motion blur button on…

I used this technique over here -> http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1441089#post1441089

Thanks, I’ll look more closely at the empty. I thought there was something obvious I didn’t understand about this procedure. You’re surely correct.

Here are a couple of my attempts (sorry about the big images!):

This is insanely awesome!
Its opened up a world of new artistic styles in Blender, limitless possibilities :eyebrowlift2:

That looks awesome Domino! Almost looks like clay, Wallis and Gromit style.

Took Domino’s blend and tweaked it a bit.I really like the lighting in the file and brilliant work you did in the nodes.
Anyways,I took out the empty and learned how to freeze the blurs in the IPO window, even though I like the jitters sometimes.

The lighting was done by TobiasDN whose blend file I started from. I might have tweaked it a little, but really any credit for the lights goes to him.

I think of the movement of the empty as the brush stroke. It was optimized for a still, and not animation. I find the full 360 degree rotation gives too big a step for the paint drag effect. I’m assuming an IPO curve like /\ would work for animation, so could move/rotate a small amount and back to get the cyclic motion without killing the effect.

The displacement map is fun to play with too as this affects the roughness of the sketch. Drove myself crazy for awhile trying to get a good looking cube with this technique. A simple Wood texture looked the most likely approach.

Just had an obvious idea, can’t believe it took me this look to figure out! Add a smooth modifier at the bottom of the stack. Set to Factor 1.0 and Repeat 2 - this sobers up the drunken monkey doing the painting

Another try at this. Great art in this post, guys! I must say thanks all of you.

Nice style… Good look to it

Here’s my latest, entitled “Scribble”

Video Here :spin:

Last one from me. It’s called “Sunset”. Ok, so I’m better at tweaking settings than naming artwork

Very nice!
