10 Cubes Challenge - #7 - Architecture

This time I bended the rules too: one of the cubes had to serve as the domain for the fog, so it got a different material as it’s a volume…

You dont need to use volume domain.
You can just set volumetric environment.

I tried this, but I didn’t get it working. Everything went completely black. I used the sky in the world material plus two area lights. As I understood, using the volumetric environment means, the fog is infinite large, thus effectively blocking any sky light.
But I would like to learn how it works. So if you could explain in more detail, I would appreciate it. Or just ponit me to a source of knowledge, if you like.

Yeah, world volume is infinitely large and the sky is infinitely far away (as are sun lights), so any density is infinite as well.

Point, area, and spot lights work though.

I was using it by setting very low density like 0,004.
Maybe you are right it doesn’t work with sky or sun light.

It does not, you need a light that is not infinitely far away. The world and sun light are infinitely far away.

So the solution for me would have been skipping the sky at all and just using some more lights. Will give it try - I love playing with this foggy, smoglike look.
