I thought I would try Blender 2.5 again r31068 just to see if it was any more stable. Within a few minutes, this is what the display shows me.
This is why I can not use Blender 2.5 yet. It simply does not work.
What I was actually doing when the crash occurred was renaming a curve datablock from the default of “Curve” to “cu_Curve”.
